If you were a movie director and needed cars for the ultimate chase scene, rivaling Steve McQueen's "Bullitt," then what protagonist and antagonist automobiles would you use?

I managed to catch the chase scene on TV last night. It's still a pretty good piece of film.
Bullitt was a cop and the Mustang was his personal car, so his car should be something a cop could afford and would drive to work.
The bad guys weren't all that high-tech (Note the '97 Winchester shotgun), so just used a common, relatively fast car with a fair amount of room.
For a remake, I'd choose a new-ish not-quite-top-of-the-line Mustang, and a similarly spec'ed Charger. Keep the colors, too.
IOW, I agree with Dougie.
I always thought Steve McQueen should have been driving a hotted up Mini-Cooper S for those chase scenes.
The television show "Alcatraz" paid homage to the Bullitt chase scene in their final episode. Same streets, same "course," even the same damned VW Beetle.

Very cool . . . ! ! !
Where are the trucks? I would put my Ford against almost every car actually street able on the road ... Granted it would be easy to find with the exhaust note from a .598 lift can and two exhaust systems on an electric switch (loud and unbearable)
Expendables had a decent truck chase but Sylvester Stallone blocked most of the scene with his roided up fore arms.

Nice!
It even made the hair stand up on the back of my neck like the original!
