Absolutely Classic: Changing Times

Story By Alan Cesar

Cars that count as “classics” are hailing from more and more recent years. At some point, front-wheel-drive cars that aren’t the Mini Cooper will fall into that category, and Charles Ferree is seeing hints of that. “I’ve had more people ask me about my car in the past year than in all the years before. A couple people [at the 2012 Classic Motorsports Mitty] even offered to buy it from me,” he says.

He’s owned this 1987 Chevy Cavalier Z24 since 1991, and it’s outlived six other vehicles in his ownership. The hatchback makes it a great car to take camping. It carried Charles, his son and their camping gear from Asheboro, North Carolina, and then to Road Atlanta for the Mitty, and they planned to camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the way home.

I never had thought of these as classic cars, but high fives for keeping it on the road and out of the scrap yard.
