Yes they were drum rears. The 2-door was about 50lbs lighter than the GTI and the drums didn't affect its autocrossing much.
The 88s should be Digifont cars with 10to1 motors and close ration 5speeds.
They do have base interiors which was part of what kept the weight down.

That's a feeling I know pretty well...hadn't had it in a long time, but I sure got a dose of it last week!
The GT's were also the 8v engine instead of the 16v engine. I had an '87 GT, loved that car. Haven't loved another fwd car besides that one, but it was fun to learn high speed/crazy driving with, very forgiving.
