Come on. We need a trivia item on some of the small odd ball brands that have been at the challenge. Wasn't there a subaru powered Wataburg (Texas pun) at one challenge? Or was that a different feature from the magazine?

Everyone knows that the Wartburg competed in the $2010 Challenge. GRM just sent an article to the everyone on 1/16/2018.
Did you know?
14. That the speed record for the fastest Challenge team for 9 of the 18 events was none other than the Stepp/Jules/Westside entry? Yup. Those two kids from Cleveland, Ohio. In 2004 they laid down a pass over 128 mph. That mark stood for 2 years and in 2006 the Flywithjunk Racing Datsun went 128.71 barely clipping the previous mark. Then, in 2010, Stepp/Jules/Westside shocked everyone with a 132+ mph lightning strike. I was on the starting line with the team when they ran that pass and it was utterly incredible. That mark lasted 7 years and was eclipsed in 2017. Westside held the record for 9 years.
I have often suggested that the fastest speeds should get recognized. There have been some incredible speeds hit over the years including the 129.9 mph pass by Crabill/Sebring/Mayflower entry in 2015. Razorback's 125+ in 2014, Malle's 125+ runs, the Sunbird's 130.44 run. I don't recommend a change in the time based scoring system in place today. But I can assure you that there is a huge difference between 122 and 125+, that is a threshold level.
Did you know?
15. That the longest Auto-X held in 2004 also had the tightest gap between 1st and 10th? The 18 event average in gap between 1st and 10th has been 2.422 seconds. But 2004 had a 1.103 second gap 54.442 to 55.545. Ironically, the 10th place Auto-X car won the overall and the 1st place Auto-X car took 10th overall.

IIRC, if the dynamic scoring rules that were introduced in 2005 were in place in 2004, the 10th place car would have been 8th.
And it being the longest autocross- I would also bet that between it and 2003, they were also the fastest- as in the highest seen speeds. I'm pretty sure we saw pretty well north of 60 on that long right hand sweeper.

I was going to use details from the 2003 A-x in tomorrows "Did you know?".
But, since you brought it up
Did you know?
16. The 2003 event was the second longest and the only other A-x held on the road course. Ironically, while the 2004 event had the narrowest gap between 1st and 10th... 2003 had the widest gap between 1st and 10th at 4.092 seconds.
BTW, I asked you what your 2004 on-course fastest speed was in 04 or 05. You had stated 70 at the time. I had asked because we were a bit higherand I was trying to gage what/how/if's for our future endeavors.

Remember, that was 14 years ago. What I do recall was that in second gear, we hit an 8000rpm rev limiter, but doing that was better than shifting to 3rd. I'd have to dig up the ratios and the tire size to figure out what speed that was. I do remember being kind of intimidated by that long sweeper, as the "run off" was basically a swamp. But it turned out ok.

Some quick searching, and not recalling what the tire size actually was- the range of speed would be 69.7 to 72.2mph. Which is well north of 60.

What about the CRX with Corvette C4 running gear. I've never attended, but that and the home made SHOgun are some of my favorites from reading the magazine.
I believe the CRX-Vette was Denny Crabil in 2004 as was the Shogun. Bill? Unfortunately passed away a few years later.

The only spectacular failures turbo cars have is not beating nitrous cars...just sayin'.

That was an inside joke... that was a partial list of MY OWN cars! Lol!!
But yes, there have been lots of crazy stuff there!
This evening Lil Stampie asked me if a Pinto had ever done the Challenge. I told him that if anyone knew it would be Mr. Nelson. Has there been? Thanks.

Yes. I can chase the years tomorrow morning. Btw, Pintos are cool.

17. That there is no correlation between Auto-x length and the gap time between 1st and 10th? However, there is a direct correlation with 1-10 gap time, drags performance and the overall win.
Statistically speaking;
The winners of the Challenge for the events with narrow 1-10 gaps (under 2.3 seconds) never finished below 3rd in the drags.
The winners of the Challenge for events with wide 1-10 gap (2.3 seconds or more) have had drag finishes 10th and higher.
In reply to wheels777 :
Does the 1-10 gap keep getting narrower, or does it seem to have stabilized?
Pete Gossett said:In reply to wheels777 :

I'm glad you asked. It is definitely getting wider as time is going on. Comparing the most recent events to the earlier events the gap has grown by 0.4 seconds. Both groups have anomalies, but using simple averaging, the gap has grown. Look at DYK 4 and 5. The 2017 and 2015 events rank in the higher gap group.
