As a bonus I'll be bringing another EGT gastropod
For years I've wanted someone to do a full boosted AWD setup on one of the escort wagons, like that Mercury challenge car back in '08 or so.

That is not a B18, that is a B16. Good old car, but marginal cooling system, only 3 main bearings and 6 volt electrics. May be 4 speed, but split windshield car was originally a 3 speed gearbox.
Interesting, im pretty sure thats the car James May drove in an episode of Top Gear too. I doubt it could be a real challenge car short of ramming in a ridiculous drivetrain though

I like that. The second award I'd like to give will be something like "Spirit of the Gastropod Award" and that will be voted upon by everyone in the class. Who do you think really nailed the idea behind the class the best. Who "gets it".
With those things in mind, I started on trophies today. I dug out a brake disk from the pile out back and made it stand up. Self supporting trophies are the best trophies.
Then I abused the chunk I cut off with the angle grinder and the bench grinder. I'm looking to justify a TIG welder to weld on some eye stalks and weld the pieces together. Things will be cleaned up/painted/made prettier. Plenty of time.
I like that, maybe like....bent up brake lines for eye stalks?

I can even practice my flares and produce the word's first trophy that leaks brake fluid.

you sir! I do like the cut of your jib.please proceed with boosting to full sails forthwith!

It would not be the first time for a drive train swap in a 444/544. this one had a Chrysler Hemi at Duryea Hillclimb in 1972. Front suspension geometry poor as well.

It made a lot of noise and went rather slowly!
NMNA. Had no idea prices have gotten so low. Sure seem like a lot of car for the money.

I want to make sure I have the rules right,
1) I can buy 4 tires and they are "free" in the budget. Yes?
2) $200 recoup with limited uses.
Smoky the Magnificient almost fits, I think I am going to try and squeak into the Gastropods.
1) I am at $2147 in my budget, (I have to go over the receipts but this includes the radiator, does that kill it?)
a) if I can sell the spare engine to myself at pick-n-pull price ($159.98 core included) it gets the budget down to $1988
b) if not, selling on Ebay or CL is my second choice
2) It has Hankook Venus summer performance tires, I need a different set to play, so "free tires" keeps the budget legit.
Any suggestions on 225/45 18 tires that are treadwear legal?

The problem is that we allowed recoup only to be used for maintenence items, not to knock down the budget. Do you have $147 in plugs and belts and hoses and what not?

Nope. And I figured it wouldn't quite work but thought I would ask.
Well I have to start cruising CL again, bummer.

It's a weird box that we put the Gastropods in. We'll have a sit down among the competitors during/after the event to see what changes people want to see and I encourage you to participate. In fact, I encourage you to ask me for a shirt and stickers and to come hang out with us anyway. I'm convinced we'll be the cool kids this year.
Sold the 'omg it was a good buy' gastropod e46.
But all this discussion has me hooked. I hope to be there with something. October is a long way away in the car-ADD world. My daily driver mazda3 is technically within budget by normal challenge rules. (i sold off the blingin' wheels it came with and turned them into Koni shocks which were definitely an upgrade - so that's a no-go for gastropod right?)

Yea, that's a normal rule recoup thing. But you're right, October is at least 2-4 cars away.

I have mentioned to the wife that I want to go even if I don't have an entry. I'm eyeballing Gerti, I forget the budget but I might be able to squeak her into this category. I need to see what I have left to do, reread the rules and go from there. AND if it is her I'll be driving Gerti from Missouri!
As a matter of fact looking at the budget which includes the brake stuff:
So if I work smart I might just be horsing a Panther body around (or over!) the cones. And after watching some youtube footage of the event from years past, I'm hooked. I'll try to get the amounts and all on the latest spreadsheet then update it this weekend....
I'm also kind of half shopping for something because I think it would be lame to make the class and not even have something that's legal for it. I'm going to be wildly uncompetitive as I really need it to seat six and be able to drive the whole family cross country if needed.
