V-6? I always thought these ran a small block V-8

I heard they were pretty gutless, but I thought that was mostly do to the SS body panels.

If it were closer/cheaper I would be tempted to buy it and make my own movie car. Its def one of my favorites from the 80's

Nope. PRV six cylinder. Like 130? hp. Gutless is right. But this one's a stick, and I believe most were automatics. Also, the stainless steel is just a veneer.

They weren't rockets when new, but not horrible dogs for the time either. Even with the stainless, they weren't horribly heavy-- 2,700 lbs (especially by today's standards) Originally they were supposed to have Smokey Yunick's hot vapor motor, but that deal fell through.

I've seen one with a Buick Grand National Turbo V6 in it. Now that would be a fun car!

They are pretty interesting, but the undercarriage is prone to rusting, and the doors had fitment problems.

Still, for not a bunch of $$$ could be a pretty cool car, with a really interesting story. John Z. was a fascinating, and important character.

I see these being worth a bundle in 20 years.

I've seen one with a Lotus V8 in it. I don't remember if it was turbocharged or not. Fit right in at the Lotus Owner's Gathering.

DeLoren started working on a turbo model right before they got shut down.

A friend has one is his shop as we speak. It's been there for a few months mainly because getting parts is a berkleying challenge. It is pretty gutless if this one is anything to go by (my stock '99 Miata would waste it), even for the time. And who besides Porsche hangs a big engine like that out past the rear wheels! When you look in the engine bay, it's amazing how far that thing hangs over the back. I'll try to shoot a few pics tomorrow to give you an idea. The V6 does have a pretty cool sound though, nothing like a domestic or Asian sounding version.

It does look fairly cool, and customers flock to it like honey. The biggest issue I have with it is the lack of head room. I'm only 5'9" and my head touches the roof with the door closed, and the interiors do not age well at all. Very GM like inside, which I suppose is to be expected given Delorean's background.

I'd have to come standard with a flux capacitor and have the optional Mr. Fusion thrown in for free for me to buy it though!

So in the end, it seams like we come to the same conclusion every time DMC's get brought up. And that is they look cool but are dogs that are beyond any hope for performance.

With a welder and a mill, it'll fit anywhere.

i had a neighbor that had one, pretty, but gutless... 3800 sc or a 4.3 vortec needs to go in it..

They were definitely gutless even for the time because they are quite porky, 2700 pounds and 130 HP. A mid sixties MGB could wear it out at 2000 pounds and 100 HP, never mind the Jensen Healey at 2100 pounds and 146 HP. Even after the emissions detuning and packing on the pork the NA 1981 280ZX would leave it far behind at 2800 pounds and 170 HP.

If planning a swap, Chapman's backbone frame design makes it really difficult to move things around to get a decent handling car with decent power. The only things the Delorean has going for it are the stainless outer body (the underpinnings are carbon steel meaning yes they will rust) and the movie role.

I'd save my nickels and dimes and buy an early Esprit instead.
