I've always wanted one of these where I hot rod it by leaving in the engine, but start fresh by ripping out all the hydraulics and wiring.
This is one of those cars I could do in 2 months 25 years ago. Now I wouldn't be driving it until I was 65. I do have a soft spot for it but not that soft.

I get it's a polarizing car. Hard to imagine Maserati and Citroën making an amazing car. But this was the 70s and the SM is very 70s cool.

Oh, god, please no. Buy a s10 not a SM

I've seen pictures someplace here in America, of an SM all done up with a custom chassis, SBC, rims etc. It was gorgeous.

Oh please. Its likely fate is being remade into a dishwasher in China. It's worth even less than an average s10 at this point. What's the harm in someone actually doing something with it?

Because some tbings should be sacrilegious and, the ls is not the solution, unless the intended victim is a gm product. I guess, I'm a rarity here because I don't like bastardizing cars to thst extent. Although, for Example, I have no problem with a scubi in a vw bus ( late one) or a 914.

Nah, Cars are not a religion. Sacrilege is something you do to people or religious icons. Putting an ls in a Citroen is as sacrilegious as using a metric crossover wrench to tighten an sae bolt. I.e. Not at all.
It's not sacrilege. It's called hot rodding. Just like a SBC or a 50's hemi in a 32 Ford coupe. I would rather have it be a hot rod than crushed. I worked on some of these back in the day. Only a masochist would want to restore this nightmare
Citroen hot rods are definitely a thing, but Google indicates that SMs don't seem to get that treatment.
Here's what I would do. It's a beautiful piece of machinery, but far to gone to restore properly. It's a perfect candidate for a resto-mod.
If the Maserati engine is savable, and can be used with a different drive line, I'd keep it. It's probably not though, so my next step would be to see modern power and transmission packages can play nice with the existing architecture.
I'd ditch the hydraulic system, and start over fresh with the suspension. Air bags are definitely a possibility, but not a given. I wouldn't necessarily even keep it FWD.
In my mind I can see a c5 transaxel under it's back end, maybe powered by that Maserati engine, or something else, preferably not mainstream, it is a Citroen after all.
It's way to classy to be a rat rod, so it will need mice paint and a nice interior when it's completed.
Citroen's have the swankiest interiors on the planet, so I'd try stay true to the original there.
Minters are north of 100k now. As for the suspension, along with the Maserati engine, it's what makes the car. The only mod I'd do is manual trans. If it does have the turning headlights, those are worth 10k. Putting an ls in this would be like putting one in a 73 911s. Hot rodding us for otherwise not noteworthy or valuable cars, unless its done in a period correct manner or an update of the same thinking. Like a 3.6 in a 73 s.
Doubting there are any parts caches except across the pond for proper restoration I'd just restomod it, those are some fantastic lines btw.
... and then get me a hat like this.

If it was worth so much it wouldn't be sitting in yard in Florida for decades.
I agree that some cars are best left unmolested, but a non running derelict of a cool car is much better being hot rodded then being crushed.

A little time on google will show you. These are rare cars. In the 80s they were near 20k when a 73 s was a 10k car. DSs are on a serious up swing.
