I'm in a pickle. Originally when I bought my e21 it was to part the thing out. The LSD diff and 5 speed trans demand a premium which would be able to bankroll an autocross project. I didn't have the heart to scrap it for the good stuff, and instead made IT the autocross project. The differential and transmission are the big ticket items to sell, and the 2002 market pays well. Anyway, the trans I got is a 3 piece 245 Getrag which was put in e21s for only two years. I want to keep it just in case that elusive 2002 project ever falls in my lap. The idea of selling this stuff makes me nauseous now because it can have a purpose in a future project of mine that doesn't have Challenge restrictions.
What I'm trying to say is that I could provide 3 recent sales through ebay that put the price range anywhere from $1000-$1600 not including the driveshaft and shifter console stuff. I'd be okay with putting it down for a lower number of $800 and calling it good, but that's a large number to FMV on a spreadsheet and people not consider shenanigans. Personally I'd rather put it down for my $1000 recoup and keep the Recaros for parts for my e30 and IS basketweaves as well. What say ye? Would a spreadsheet filled with FMV budget recoup piss you guys off?

Here's one outlier that went for only $730, but I think that had more to do with the fact there is only a picture of a box and no way of verifying what you bought until it hits your doorstep. It could have been a 2 piece from the 83 year which isn't the preferred trans for either e21 or 2002 crowd. Just want to be honest about this, and show the lower end that may or may not have been the same style trans.

I feel your pain, I am in a similar boat with my recently purchased Camaro.
Camaro recoupe thread
Finding several recent transactions is a great start. The more data points you can provide the better.
Email the GRM staff for a formal verdict. I believe the rules say you must sell the item, but in the case of unobtonium parts that you may want for future exploits... selling it may not make sense.

The current rules state:
“Q: Can I “sell” parts back to myself at FMV?
A: Yes, but this requires strong supporting documentation of the part’s FMV.”
It used to be against the rules but it has been allowed for several years. The don't be a dick rule applies as well ie; not attempting to FMV a back seat for $500 because you found some random craigslist ad asking that much.
So I can provide 5 completed sales in the US from Ebay with an average of $1196 including shipping. Personally I know shipping would be in the $100-150 range depending on where and who you use, so say it's an even $1000? Those 5 sales all were completed within the months of October 2018 through December 2018, so it's recent stuff. I feel like that is a good bit of documentation that what I have is worth my recoup amount, but I want to make sure I'm providing STRONG supporting documentation. By the time the challenge rolls around I could probably have another 5-10 sales to go with it if supply isn't drying up?
I think that's a fair set of documentation. Always a good idea to email Tom to get a verdict before you destroy your budget.

I won't question your FMV because I'm one of those 2002 guys wanting an LSD.
If You are useing the car the trans came in all this is moot, regardless of tranny value. it's part of the initial purschase, I Sold the trans from a future challenge car and am replacing it with one That I got for Free.

I'm not using this trans for the car.
The diff is the only item listed in my first post that stays with the build.
MY bad I guess I got Confused,
Like Tires You Must Have a Tranny.
FREE Tranny's (NOT the Key West Kind) For Everyone,
It's a Factory Trans. Not worth Talking about, If it could gain you multiple seconds we should Talk More, a few Tenth's not.
A Six Speed Dbl. Clutch, Sequential Shifter Who not. Not legal
I sent an email to Tom with my documentation and explanation of the situation. If the trans has to be sold to make the Challenge, it will. That is a fact. I would prefer to keep it, but it is what it is. We'll see what the official verdict is soon enough. Thanks for the help everyone, I hope to all get a chance to meet you this October.
