Staging is done with the tires. The extender or low facial trip the timer in the traps. It "shortens" the trip. The Funny car above shows how the front end is pushed down and get to the traps quicker then the front tires.
Yes you *should* stage with the tire, my example is if the car is too low and you stage on the spoiler/front end. It's quite common on the FWD cars as front tire pressure effects height a lot.
