The shop has a scrap metal dumpster. A year ago the boss/owner said I could dig through it and grab what I want. Up till now there's been nothing that has really been any concern about tracking.
Well we started making our turbo exhausts in-house recently, and it looks like I'm gonna be makin a bunch of pie cuts and such out of 304 Stainless in the future. So how would I track this?
We don't separate metals at all, nor do we clean them. Hydraulic cylinders go full of oil, aluminum goes in next to stainless goes in next to carbon steel, all sorts of other nonsense.
Dumpster sourced = free.
Dumpster sourced in fenced area = ? scrap prices.
Scrap prices cant be more than $0.20/lb for mixed material. It would take a lot to have a major impact on budget.

Mainly wanted confirmation that mixed materials would be the category to go with. Didn't want to put it down as that and have someone get upset.
Any other views?

Just to look at the other side of the coin, is it mixed metals since you'll be grabbing only what you want?

Ive grabbed a variety of stuff. This is just the first thing Ive thought would be controversial.
However my argument would be that, at most, I'm removing X lbs of metal from what the shop would get paid at the scrap metal place for mixed metals. So that weight times the cost per pound is the actual cost of the material to all involved at this level. The scrap metal place might separate it, but thats a hypothetical I can't control or track
Mixed metal scrap is more like $.07/lb around here.

Actually, considering where I am, I know a lot of dumps are still processing debris from Hurricane Milton. I wouldn't be surprised if there is at least a little overlap with metal as well.
I have yet to look though.
I am ok with classifying it as mixed metals. You would need to have documentation of current price for mixed metals as I understand the rules. This is what I did for drops on my roll cage reinforcements.
