I'd love to see someone hook one of these up to an old 4 speed and run 8 motorcycle  ITBs.

If it's on the interwebz it must be true.

"Probably"

VW, likes to keep things the same so parts bin engineering can work, but no guarantees.

Won't go into drive, doesn't mean the same as doesn't go in drive.   Maybe it's just a linkage problem.

I know nothing of VW/Audi other than you have to put them into "service position" to do about anything. That sounds to be on the level of bend over and grab your ankles.

After seeing the washers holding the starter on Tim's FV project, I think one bolt and a few washers would be good enough for you. Besides, if you use solid mounts for the engine & trans, do they really still need to be physically bolted together?

You need this Stampie, it has your special brand of GRM all over it.

Johnny Cash did it with an "Adaptic kit".

It certainly wouldn't run any less than a stock one.

Looking at pics of the engine and trans mounted up shows it to be such a tidy package. It's a shame they had so many troubles. It seems that VW never sold any internal bottom end parts like bearings, connecting rod bolts, etc. so rebuilds are impossible. It really looks like a neat way to shove 8 cylinders into a small mid-engined car.

The W8 was nice for it's time, but the later motors are better. I was working as a service writer at a VW dealership and we had a customer with a W8 that ALWAYS had problems. Because of that I probably drove his car about 500 miles between visits. He later bought the next generation 3.6l 4motion Passat and the power of that blew away the W8.

Actually the service position is quite handy. You replace two of the bolts with long shouldered bolts, remove the rest and the entire rad support c/w everything moves forward without disconnecting anything.

That being said B5 Passat with a drivetrain known to be unreliable? NOPE - not even for free.

How long does it take to do that the first time and then with experience?  I remember seeing an Audi A4 at a tow auction with a bad alternator. After seeing that you couldn't replace it without doing service position I passed.

In reply to Stampie : The service position took me an hour to figure out the first time.  You have to remove the turn signals, grill, bumper skin, and a bit more.  Then remove the big bolts and slide the radiator support forward 6".

BTW, the alternator is slightly larger than the hole this then gives you and requires another 2 hours of cursing Germany and all things German to remove and an equal amount of time to jam the new alternator into place.  All very frustrating and by FAR the most idiotically placed alternator I've done.
