Hi all.  Question regarding side windows on this years challenge cars.  NHRA wants side windows in the up position on full bodied cars/street cars, etc. when drag racing.  What if you've gutted your car and no longer have side windows, let alone regulators, door handles, etc.?  Are we required to install plexiglass or something similar or use a window net or arm restraints?  I know in years past I've seen plenty of cars without windows and nobody seemed to care, but I also know Tom said look out at tech this year.  Trying to avoid any last minute surprises.

Also, regarding the aforementioned missing door handles/latching mechanism - if the factory handle and door latch mechanism are gone, what would constitute a safe and Challenge compliant egress mechanism.  Currently we are thinking a slide latch with handle on both the inside and outside of the door, painted red and labeled for emergency workers.  Simple to implement and also to operate.  Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Read the NHRA rule book (it's on line) and look for specific requirements. I'm not sure if the absence of window glass is directly covered, or not. Their rules also call out differences for convertibles, so you might be able to use some of that, too. Having an idea of how quick your car might run would be helpful as the rules vary with ET.

This is also addressed in the Challenge rules. Sorry on my phone so hard to copy and paste. I'll do so once home.

Hey I figured it out.

  • Windows may be rolled down during drag runs (if you don't have windows, you'll be required to wear a full-face helmet).

Budget Exemptions:

  • One window net and its attachment hardware.

In reply to rich911s :

As for egress first focus should be on the driver getting out as fast as possible without any help from emergency workers.  I can't find the video but I remember seeing one of a I think spec Miata where a fuel line burst on track spraying down the interior.  If I have a fire my fat behind is getting out before they get to help me.  You're welcome Tom.  I'm about due for my rereading of the rules to make sure there's nothing I missed.

If you have the original door latches I'd put them back on and use a cord/wire/strap to pull on them to release the door.

I guess rtfm (rtfr?) was the clear answer to Q#1.  I did read through the NHRA rules, talk about much confusion with regard to windows.  I thought I had read the challenge rules, but I clearly missed the part about not having windows not being an issue.  Thanks Tom, Stampie.

Our original latches are long gone, along with 90% of the door.  However, the door mechanism we came up with opens from the inside and out, and is as easy as sliding a handle 3", so I think we're ok there.

Thanks again!
