this is a steal, even if it doesn't run.
I don't know about steal, good deal, but I seem to recall seeing a few of those post war-54 cars for similar money in better condition just poking around CL out of boredom. That was when scrap was a lot higher.
I've certainly seen some cars of this era for cheap, but all old cars are not equal. A 4-door Plymouth or Desoto just doesn't have the same appeal.
1950-54 Chevy 2-door is highly sought after in the low-rider, street-Rod and gasser communities - if you've seen nicer for less you should have bought it and flipped for profit.
Not sure it's a deal given salt effecrs and what it's missing. My buddy picked up a cherry older resto for 6k last year so they do exist...
I don't know much about old chevy values, but I do know that if it is still available after 24 hours of being on detroit CL, then it is certainly not a steal.

That may very well be evidence that I am off-base on this one ....

Didn't mean to sound like an a-hole on that one, but I kinda did. Sorry.
The car also may be long gone with the ad still up.

Not at all, I was actually agreeing with you - I was expecting the ad to be gone by now.
Maybe I was off on this one, but I spend a good portion of everyday looking through classic (especially pre-64) car ads and this one really struck me as an excellent deal.
Less than a single paycheck (obviously not for everyone, but a think applies for the typical enthusiast looking for a toy/project) for a very popular car and body style, Solid body and floors with potential to run with minimal effort.
Then again, the pics are minimal so there might be something I'm missing.

In any case it looks like it would make a great hot rod or whatever. Its got a nice shape.

I was unaware of that, though certainly nowhere near the demand for the 55-57 cars, right? The car that sticks out in my head was a Chevy, similar body style, might have been a 4 door though, it was red, no serious rust, might have been an older restoration job, good enough shape to drive as is. It sat on the Detroit CL for weeks, the price definitely dipped to 2k or less before it was sold.
55 - 57s are done to death like Baklava, there's some class in the off brands and unusual stuff like Ekmek Kataifi.
Besides, all the hot rodders scarfed them up.
