The description of "a hole in the trans case" tells me that the trans is shot. It had one or more of the rivets that hold the ring gear to the diff snap off and when that happens the trans case gets holed, the R&P is shot, and the trans has metal shavings floating in the gear lube.

It's described as "the self machining" trans.

Which is weird because the SMS 020s didn't go into production until later, an '83 trans should have had two circlips.

Broke a rivet in my '91 16v GTI trans. All the 020's have that problem. You can buy a bolt kit from VW but they never bothered to put it in the trans themselves to start with.
