I have a 85 gti I'm selling, it is the 8valve, pretty good condition for it's year, was recently bought it from a guy who used it as a ice racer, I have title, it's a 5 speed and starts up good, do not know the actual miles because there is a different block, tranny is perfect and shifts fine, there is a little dent on the driver side fender but real easy fix, other then that it's a good car, just need money or I'm willing to trade, for moped or dirtbike, thanks

Any shots under the hood?
Any mods?
do you know what block/tranny were installed...are they "Stock"?
Isn't that a lot of money for a tired little '85 GTI?
Looks like it about a minute and half away from throwing some untraceable code that will cause the "check engine" light to go on permanently and preclude an inspection sticker here in MA from ever being issued.
Ever chase an Air Bag Malfunction code in one of those little suckers? Forget it . . .
I say entropy has already set in or is just about to. Stay away or offer half !
'85 GTI with an air bag? Love to see that one. Dude, this car is a decade before OBD1, too and is about as basic as you can get. Outside of vacuum leaks the FI is very reliable and a SOHC VW engine from that era is a tank.
Good car for a good price, but you could probably get it for less if there is any noticeable rust. No CEL or airbags on an 85. Old school diagnostics here, mostly centered on vacuum leaks. That car would be listed for $2k easily here. I traded my 87 GL for a $1500 Rotax kart.
Sorry, thinking of the later model Cabrios . . .
Did that year have a distributor?
Wondering how simple those really are, maybe include them on my list of possibilities. Gotten kind of gun shy around the air cooled VWs, Jettas in particular. Started to lump them all into the same group, probably doing a disservice to the early GTI in doing so.
Yes distributor. CIS injection.
How simple? Prior to owning mine, the only repairs/maintenance I had done on any car were oil changes and replacing bulbs, wipers, and batteries. While I owned the car, I replaced the suspension, 1/2 the fuel system, an alternator (including fabbing a custon bracket and wire harness), the shift linkage, and the brakes. I was also able to troubleshoot most of those needed repairs. All this in a single car, gravel driveway with no garage using simple hand tools and a Bentley repair manual (which is a must for these cars). The only "computer" is a box that helps monitor the fuel mixture. Parts are cheap and readily available. The only car I miss more is the E21 that I scrapped before getting it to run.

This is true, on those 70's Mercedes. Nothing simpler by the time CIS-E came around for these.
