Up for sale is my 1988 BMW 325IX. It is being sold as a PARTS CAR, but could be repaired to be a driver.

SOLD

Diamantschwarz Metallic (Grey) with grey leather interior Odometer: 253,096 Timing belt was replaced at 240,000 miles according to sticker on fuse panel. Car is currently located in Morrisville, VT. I am in Warren, VT.

The issue is that the rear spring perches have rusted through. I purchased the car this way as a parts car for another identical 325IX that I acquired. I have a clean Pennsylvania title in hand.

I am told that perches can be cut out of a donor shell and welded in to make this car driveable again. The previous owner removed and discarded the rear shocks so that no one would attempt to drive the car on the road.

The only parts I removed from the car thus far are the cat-back exhaust, and I swapped out the wheels/tires from my other IX.

My plan was to keep the car as a parts car, but in reality, I'd hate to see that happen if someone with some welding ability can save the car. It's at my friend's shop, and I need to move it before winter. My wife would prefer that it not sit in our driveway all winter... So I'm reluctantly selling it.

The only other rust is in the trunk under the battery tray and on the same spot on the other side of the trunk.

The engine does run, and it successfully passed the "jack test." I have a short video of the engine running on my phone that I can text to interested buyers.

Wow. When I was in college I had a 4 door automatic IX for a while. Where was this deal back then?

Awesome cars. For the uninitiated, this one looks to have the front bumper intact, which is rare. it is also an 88, which means it got the m steering wheel. Manual trans, awd, 2 door, e30. Rockin.

I assume by 'jack test' you mean jacking the rear wheels off the ground and seeing if the car will drive forward? (essentially testing the transfer case)?

An idea would be to go coil over on the rear and not worry about the spring perches.

If you decide to part it out, I might want those wheels.

The body kit will also make any E30 look more bad-ass.

Props for wearing a GRM shirt while taking the photos.

rcutclif: yes, jack up the rear end and put it in gear, roll slowly forward to confirm transfer case is working.

wlkelly3: That was by chance. That shirt just happened to be the top shirt in the drawer that morning, and I wasn't planning on taking pictures that day!

rcutclif: I thought about the coilover route. Since the car wasn't designed to have that set-up, I think one would want to at a minimum brace between the coilovers to add some support structure.

I owned an E30 M3 for 15 years, the whole time I wanted an IX for a winter beater. SWMBO wants me to have a more presentable winter car. I want this. I can weld and will fix this, just send it to Michigan with the title signed and it will live a long and drift-full life.
