Is the widebody Yugo the infamous GRM "Yugo from Hell"?
Yes it is the YFH, this is a hell of a deal for someone, get in there and get a piece of GRM history.
I was the one who brought it to the Challenge in '06.
I've got a picture hanging over my desk with it staged at Gainesville Motor Speedway against Bill Elder's 1969 Barracuda.
It really sucked at drag racing. I'm pretty sure my 60' time was sufficient to allow me to make a sandwich AND do a load of laundry.
I beat Bill (and others) on the autocross, and gave out buttons to each of them that said, "I Got Beat by a Yugo!".
Bill returned the favor by giving me a note (still framed over my desk) that said, "You got BEAT by a treacherous old poot driving a 37-year-old Barracuda!".
Still love that car.
BTW- assuming that is the same trans that was in it when I sold it, it is a custom built 4 speed built by Steve Hoelscher. Probably has less than 20 miles on it since the build.
The 4 speed has much better gearing than the 5 spd for autox.
I used to race a Fiat 128 (which the Yugo was the Fiat licensed copy). Three comments: 1. This motor is very oversquare in terms of bore/stroke, and loved to be revved to the moon all day long. I redlined at 8500 with a stoke bottom end. The SCCA X1/9 racers (same motor) went to 10-11K. 2. Steve Hoelscher was a multiple SCCA National Champion running a X1/9, which ran the same tranny internals. Steve ran a transmission shop when he built a tranny for me. If he built one of the transmissions for these cars, it was done by the best! 3. The handling for these can be set up to be very quick and forgiving with some simple low cost mods. As with many FWD cars, the front/rear weight distribution isn't perfect, but is excellent right/left with a driver in place.
If someone buys these and needs some advice on setup for road racing, drop me a line. Marc in Indy
It's one of only two cars I've ever regretted selling and I only let it go a 2nd time to get the first one back.
Ive seen the stock one included in this package and its a nice little runner too. This is an amazing deal being offered, the parts package alone is quite extensive.
YFH.
Really??
I need to stay away from GRM if this thing is going to keep showing up on here for a cheaper price each time.
For those who know the YFH details, any thoughts on the viability of using it for rallycross? Does the custom built race trans have an LSD? Would a 24" tall rally tire clear everything?
In reply to FooBag:
I've never RallyXed.
However, the YFH is really flimsy (like all Yugos). There is not much holding it together.
I'd have to have a cage.
Oh, the want is very, very strong indeed!
Another example of having time, money and desire but no space nor real need. This would be very hard to justify to the wife and yet so very worth a few nights of the cold shoulder.
If only I knew someone nearby that has tons of space and knowledge that I could team up with to campaign this to further challenge glory with... (Hint, Hint Jim)
I don't have many photos in its current state but I'll dig up what I have an post them later. The 2nd Yugo is a stock blue Yugo but it is a GV+ like the YFH which means rare 1300CC EFI motor and 5 speed, great little toy on its own.
For rally cross I'd use the stocker, the YFH really needs to autox or be on a track.
TB, tons of space I don't have unfortunately, I should but I'm monstrously disorganized and need to get the shops cleaned out and the LL sold off before I'd consider taking on another car again. And I really want to get back to building the Wartburg.
The parts package that's with this car is huge and valuable. Not just rare Yugo stuff but Fiat 128/X1/9 stuff as well. Hell the Koni reds...I spent 6 years hunting for a set of Koni reds for a Yugo, they dont exist, this may be the last set anywhere. Big valve head, 1500 cc motors at least one with a full windage tray and 9.5:1 pistons. Spare 5 speed transmission, very saleable to the Yugo community to recoup some money. One Faza Dayton 40/80 camshaft, an original not a regrind, 2 PBS SX1 camshafts. These are the hot parts for the 128 motors. The parts are there to put together a nice little 120hp high rpm screamer in this car.
I am happy to offer technical advice on the project as most of the parts that are there are things I collected with a plan in mind, if someone local buys it I might even be convinced to spend some time on it.
The stocker could be put back together and sold for the cost of the entire package to the right buyer or at least a quick $1000 if you want it gone fast (I might be tempted to buy it for that)
Kinda how it left my shop, pretty much how it should be sitting now.
Holy crap, that photo reminds me of what my shop looks like when it's clean, its been so long.

Just do like I do, and avoid the classifieds forums. Oh, wait...
It's a real bummer / very good thing that this is about as far from Vancouver, WA as you can get while staying in the states.
.....car........is going into a swap deal........
it WILL...race again. stay tuned. No more "for sale" at this time.
As long as keeps getting cheaper each time it comes up for sale....
If it were closer it would be in my Barn...
