Yeah, I love those cars, especially that color. But why does it look like the shifter is about 6 feet further into 4th than normal?

I expected that to be in a lot worse shape for that kind of scratch. Not that it's nice or anything.

Well, not personally, but there are plenty of documented swaps with small block chevy and ford V8s. I think someone even used to make a kit for it, but even without a kit there's room for the engine so it's just a matter of cut, weld, drive :)
