Are VW diesel filters directional?

With older VWs, you just cranked it until it ran and the fuel system purged itself....

Someone plz tell me no. I was thinking of diesel conversion on the GTI just because I was pissed off at it that much.

In reply to noddaz:

The ad says it needs a battery too. I bet it didn't have enough juice to prime.

If you think the GTI is pissing you off now then just wait until it has only 52hp and 74lb/ft of torque.

Good lord do I hate NA VW diesels. All the drawbacks of a diesel. The clatter, the stench and the premium price without any power to speak of. Sure if you drive em like a granny they will hit almost 50mpg but driving the gas engined version in the same fashion will get you into the 40's with fuel that is usually much cheaper.

Nah, see, I'd throw an oil cooler and a turbo on it after swapping the aneroid thingus onto the injection pump. I've looked into this just a little bit The internal differences between turbo and nonturbo are trivial enough to not worry about. But the biggest issue has been the mental block of spending $1000-1500 for a used engine of unknown quality. What has been pissing me off about the GTI has been the CIS and the inability to find parts for it, and how somehow it would be cheaper for me to put twin Webers on the thing than it'd be to put Megasquirt on it. (It has only run off of the cold start injector since I got it last spring. The fuel distributor is junk.)

Even still, 53hp can't be all that bad. I don't know where my Quantum is power-wise but top speed on flat ground is about 70-75mph. Annoying to have people pass you going uphill, then they get in front of you and slow down even further, so I re-pass them, then they pass me again on the next hill...

53hp is better than no horsepower. I will agree to that.

Last time I checked it was about $1500 to have the injection pumps modded to handle a turbo. That was a dozen years ago though so who knows what has transpired since then. I know the eco-diesel injection pumps were trading for over a grand and could handle a bit more boost but would still have troubles hitting stock GTI power and torque levels.

Huh, I found a guy selling injection pumps for $400 and the bits to convert a nonturbo pump to turbo for less than that.

Not worried about stock GTI power levels. 100hp was fun in my 2200lb Golf so 80hp should still be fun in an 1800lb GTI.

I don't mean to sound overly harsh. I just love rabbits and have had way more than a dozen of the silly things, 2 of which were diesels. A 1.5 and a 1.6 because that was the better one right? That motor just sucked all the life out of the cars. The kind of power delivery that had you constantly wondering if something was wrong or worn out. They turned me off diesels until the TDI's happened.

Now, ponying up for a 1.9TDI swap is something I can get behind.
