I've been looking for a less depressing, more engaging DD (The Crown Vic SUCKS in this regard.) and this popped into my crosshairs...then I priced a replacement exhaust.
I suppose a straight pipe would be do-able, I remember the sweet sounds yours made with the muffler removed. Never has 3 liters sounded so angry and so beautiful! 
If the cats are there, cheap muffler (resonator) + str8 pipe = done!!
Word of warning . . This thing is THIRSTY!! I never broke 19mpg in mine (probably because I was always on it) and avg 16 mpg 
. The manual was rated at 16/23 and auto was +2 on the hwy.
They do have their quirks . . . When I get to a real keyboard, I shoot you a list of areas that will need attention if you are interested!
I appreciate the offer but I don't have the testicular fortitude for a craigslist BMW yet.
If this one were a manual (if there is such a creature) that would change things.
LOL!! CL BMW is good and bad. Mine was a CL find . . . $1000 + 1000 in parts to shore up everything.
