When people say 'needs clutch', how often do they mean 'needs new slave cylinder'? (Or other hydraulic clutch component?)

Or maybe the transmission is a box of marbles now? No telling what someone who doesn't know any better might think.
Honestly, I think the 530i is the least desirable E34. The headaches of the V8 (ok, I don't remember the gory details, just being told "don't bother" by people more knowledgeable than I) with only ~210hp.
When you open the hood and look at the brake fluid level, you will/could answer one question. If it is not full, check if the level is lower than the line to the clutch master cylinder. The fluid line to the clutch master is at the 50% line in the reservoir. When our E36 slave failed it would not hold any fluid, at all. Getting it bleed required three attempts.
When you change the ATF in the 5sp, do not be surprised if almost nothing drains out of the gear box. Make sure you open the fill plug first.
