Anyone need a VR6 engine donor?

My roommate has a 94 Jetta VR6 that he needs to get rid of.

It has the usual electrical gremlins: back windows don't work, ABS comes on randomly, turn signals don't flash when you hit the brakes, brake lights don't work but the rear turn signal lights come on instead, etc.

Second gear grinds but the engine runs ok last time I drove it. Waterpump and clutch were replaced in the last couple years. It has around 150k miles I think, battery is dead and so I can't check the odometer.

He would let it go for $800 or less or maybe trade for a running car.

Has stock BBS wheels, paint is peeling.

Those also have much better suspension geometry, brakes, swaybar, etc than the MK2 or other MK3, so if you want to build one that handles really well, put the suspension on a 4 cylinder mk2 and sell the Vr6.

Or just fix the electrical problems. They sound simple.

Well he doesn't want to bother with it and I'm not going to fix it for him so it's up for sale as-is.

BTW - Does it have red turn signals instead of separate amber ones? For some reason, people love to put single-filament bulbs in VWs with red turn signals, which causes the exact symptoms you've described...

I'm pretty sure they are yellow, I'll check it out sometime though.

Well we put a good battery in it (doesn't come with the car) and it starts intermittently. Usually it will start but sometimes it won't even crank. The started was replaced (twice due to a faulty one the first time) three years ago.

I don't wanna deal with it. My roommate (the owner) doesn't wanna deal with it. $500 and it's yours. Either it will start or we can push start it if you bring a good battery.

I've wondered if that would work, but I sourced a bunch of 2.0 suspension parts for my car already. If I bite the bullet and go with coil-overs or something, maybe I'll switch. That would mean I wasted $250 bucks on a set of takeoff Neuspeed anti-roll bars, though.

The main advantage to the VR6 is more caster, although many other things help too. My friend is going to put full VR6 suspension (and boxster brakes) on his 91 gti tdi project.

I'm guessing it needs an ign. switch (electric).

If it's still available in a couple of weeks, I may take a look at it.

I too would be sure to check ALL the bulbs to see that they have the correct number of filaments.
I had a Rabbit with similar problems. The brake light should have been a double and rather was a single. Due to this, what appeared to be the brake lights stayed on all the time and when you hit the brakes the dashboard lights and the front amber lights came on. Took me forever to figure it out.

+1 on the bulbs. Dual filament bulb problem. Either a single filament bulb in a dual element connection or the wrong dual filament bulb is in. Fairly typical problem as my co-worker says...
