Has cylinder rattle but runs and drives but needs rebuilt 2000 for all of it the hardly covers all of the turbo parts!!
And just what is cylinder rattle?
the photo showing the presumed owner hanging their head in despair says it all

It's when you suck a bunch of crap into your engine through your cleverly unfiltered air intake and it rattles around in the cylinders.

On a 944 its when the geniously designed cylinder walls decide to separate from the other part of the block. 996s can do it to. It's called the Porsche shuffle. (Luckily I have a 3.6, which doesn't really know how to do the Porsche shuffle)
T70 on a miata....
.... with 305cc injectors.
And a mildly crappy piggyback for tuning.
What could possibly go wrong?
As long as they're not using a manual boost controller and keep it to less than 6-8 lbs, nothing tooooo horrible. But still.... to quote another forum... "Aids"
As a guy who's never gotten into turbo's, why is this setup so horrible?
With a turbo you need to balance compression with air flow, fuel flow, timing and octaine (among other stuff) plus, as shown, there's nothing to keep the engine and turbo free from debris. (no air filter)
In reply to noddaz:
I'd guess poor tuning managed to blow the skirts off a piston or something like that.
On a Miata it could just need an oil change to make the lifters happy. Or.....dead.
Engine is a 91 escort gt.

AKA, a Mazda BP 1.8, same as the 94-97 Miata. More or less, anyhow.

It's the less that I worry about.
It's no less. Same motor. Actually probably has a MBSP, which didn't make it into the Miata until much later.

It's a HUGE turbo. On a SMALL motor. With WEAK rods. And BAD tuning solution.
It's a bad combination.

Without knowing the true sizing numbers it's a bit hard to say, right? That said, this is the kind of turbo a Buick Grand National owner might swap on the hunt for 10's, yes?
T70 + 305 + poor tune in non optimal piggy back ECU = Cylinder Rattle
The guy laid out the whole equation for us! Best case it is the hla's rattleing, but most likely it needs a new lump.

You know that thing would have the piss ran out of trying to get that T70 to spool... lol
Right. It might see a couple PSI in 2nd. Possibly "full" boost in 3rd.
Some poor guy just showed up on MT.net. Guess he bought this car. It's worse than originally thought.
Links for said newb bashing?
I don't think he's being bashed. Genuinely nice guy, just didn't know what he was getting into.

Oh Jesus. Miataturbo.net? Ouch. Reading now...
..I'm surprised he was only called stupid once. They actually took it easy on the guy for that site.
That car is toast.
