No, the early Mercury Escort was the Lynx. The Tracer was the Mercury version of the later CT20-chassis Escort. But yes, this is the Mercury version of the EXP.

Bought one new in 1982, because no one else would trade me for my 4x4 short bed stepside Dodge truck during the gas crisis. 64k trouble-free miles (except for the engine computer, which I bought at KMart and replaced in the parking lot), over 30 mpg. Nothing bad to say about LN7s. And, btw, there was no back seat.

Remember, "engine computer" had a different meaning in 1982 than it does now.

Heck, no, it was a sports car, baby! A friend of my mom's had an EXP, I remember riding in the back. There was a parcel shelf where the seat should have been, which was good enough for 12-year-old me. But looking back, there's no reason it couldn't have had one. Guess they wanted to project a "sporty" image.

The story I heard 99th hand, was that a rear seat was planned. At an Exec review someone high in the company sat in the back seat while the hatch/glass was opened. Someone outside the car innocently slammed the hatch and nearly split the Exec's head open. The rear seat was quickly canceled. I’ve no idea if it's true or not, but it's a fun story.
