I really want one of those. Damn. Wanted to do that instead of the '84, but everything I read says the '84 is lighter and those didn't have rack and pinion steering.
I had an '80 hatch and loved it. That car is sweet. Damn.

Been trying to read up on it- how many stock bhp, anyone know?
Wonder if he would trade for an MG Midget. Prolly not...

It would be a 20R, so, I want to say it's like 95HP and 120 Lb. Ft. But grab a 22R short block from a junk yard, bolt on the 20R head and it's supposed to be really good. Hey, it's a Hemi!
Massive HP isn't it's strong suit, but it's a super cool car and way, way fun to drive. The R motors are lazy. Good low torque, but nothing up top. A motor swap would be worthwhile if you wanted to go fast. From what I hear, the 3VZE is an easy and worthwhile upgrade. Personally, I'm with N Sperlo, I'd go with a six. I'd probably find a decent 7MGE for cheap money and have a big, giant smile on my cheap ass face whenever I drove it around. That would move it along just fine for me.
I'm just getting a handle on the suspension, but it's more or less AE86. Kaaz 2 way fits, coil overs up front and 86 springs in the rear. Make a panhard bar and you're pretty set up for not a lot of money. Well, the Kaaz isn't so cheap, but everything else.

I like this!!! I'm not looking for a tire scorcher, rather a fun autoXer.
From what I've read, and what you wrote, Toyota engines are pretty cheap and easy to up the get up and go factor. In fact I considered a 4AGE swap into my Midget, but it's not worth it.
I'll shoot him an email...
JDM engines can be had for cheap. I would suggest a swap for fun, but I know what its like when money is an issue. The project halts and sits in a barn for four years....

I believe this could be a very good FSP car. Maybe better than Tom Celica, but hard data is needed. Please buy it and weigh it.
I think an intake, carb and header would probably make the 20R a lot happier.
Actually, I'm up to my eyeballs in 6.5k AE86 rear springs. If you get it, shoot me a note and I'll make you a deal on a set.

Cool- thank you for the offer!
Just waiting to hear back from him...

Ah- you've been down that road before?
My guess is it would be easier to find used parts for though (the Toyota).
y'all just missed out on the 1980 RHD JDM Celica 2000 GT I sold for under challenge prices. One of the guys on JNC is restoring it now.
Must remember:

Dang, it's not working, I love it. Now imagine this:
