I picked up a '97 miata parts car the other day and part of the deal was this engine. The guy wasn't very knowledgeable and thought it was for a 99+ miata. Any idea on what it could be? Also included were the correct 1.8 and a 1.6... http://picpaste.com/20141004_110637-m1vifvT3.jpg

It's not a Miata engine, but it does look like a 1.8 BP. The intake manifold is a FWD application and I suspect there's a dizzy on that exhaust cam. Might be a Protege engine, I'm not sure what their valve covers look like.

You can use it in a Miata with the right oil pan, intake manifold, CAS, etc, but it's the cheap choice, not the best choice.

Thanks Keith. I kind of suspected just that, and you're right that there is a dizzy on the exhaust cam. Are the blocks the same?

I am not a Mazda engine expert by any means but that looks like a Mazda B6D

Not a B6, the dizzy's on the exhaust cam. So it's a BP.

Blocks are the same. I think that'll have a cast crank instead of forged, possibly cast instead of forged rods, unknown compression ratio and econocar cams.

So is it worth more as a bare miata block, or a complete protoge engine?

looks like a 95+ valve cover. the head should say bp on it. the bp long block that came in the early pro (90-97?)and escort gt is the same as miata except the intake cam. the b8 sohc has the cast crank which is way lighter and can be used in the bp.

That looks like a 1.5 dohc protege engine. my 94 lx had one. fun willing to rev motor, kinda gutless though.

Might be a good base for a mpg miata build. I routinely got upper 30's beating the dog snot out of it.

So someone removed the 1.8 BP and replaced with a 1.5? Sacrilege!!

I believe it was a plan, that thankfully was never executed. I got the car with the engine and transmission removed. It also came with a 1.6 miata engine, and this engine. The story is that it was burning oil and rather than just doing a valve job, the PO got in way over his head and basically stopped after buying the second wrong engine. In a strange coincidence, I have the car less than a mile away from the dealership it was originally sold after the '99s came out.

The car is too far gone for really anything, so I am parting it out. Anyone need NA miata parts?

If it's red, i could use a wingless trunk and some fenders, mostly passenger.

I am not going to the challenge, but I do have a nice (no holes) trunk and fenders. Same name on gmail if you're interested. I am also amazed at how light the hood is. Wow.
