Cat broke up and got sucked back into the combustion chambers, the bores will be massively worn and the rings shot. The timing chain will also have "stretched" from the very dirty oil being run through the engine over time, and the excessive crankcase pressures will have blown out most oil seals (valve cover gasket especially).

VQ time!

Former room mate had one of these, they haul ASS and handle really well too!

This is one of the few FF cars I'd be willing to own. I've found lots of them needing an engine.

Fake listing. Spec V's are never that cheap even with a toasted engine.

+1 for fit_is_slow. the 2.5 is known for exactly this kind of failure. Of course, it could be something as simple as a CKP, or fuel pump, or.............

And I have to disagree on the comment about these handling well. I owned a 2003, and while it was a torquey SOB, I thought it handled like a pig. Except for that LSD pulling it off a corner. That much it did quite well.

How does the pieces of a cat go counter to exhaust flow and end up back in the combustion chamber? I know all about reversion, but the general flow is in the direction away from the engine. Is the cat mounted extremely close to the head?

LOTS of that going on in this area. Of course CL doesn't do a thing about it.

Here's a thread talking about it along with a parts diagram that shows how close it is to the head:

+1 on the blown engine. Very common, especially on 02's. IIRC, the pre-cat breaks down (too close to the block, too much heat), and small particles of ceramic material get pulled into the cylinders when engine braking, which ultimately leads to engine breaking (See what I did there?). The good news is a VQ swap if fairly well documented (and even commercially available if you aren't up to it). If you want to go replacement engine, pretty much any base Altima with a QR25 is a potential donor. An aftermarket header without a precat will ensure you don't repeat the engine death, but may not be emissions legal. As a side benefit, getting rid of the pre-cat results in a noticeable HP bump.

As for the handling, a Nismo rear sway bar does WONDERS for the factory "bread truck" handling.

I've found cheap 02's but not that cheap! Still holding out for a newer one, that red interior is too much for me.
