I'm half tempted to make an offer.
My parents had one of those YEARS ago. Was silver with the same red interior. I was about 7 when they had it. What a piece. I like it.
My dad had a 2 door. Pretty sweet, these cars. Except the floor fell through. Long story. Involves that Leonard Little DUI/Homicide.
WOW. My mum bought new a red '85 GL wagon, same red interior. The second of seven Escorts owned between my parents and I, IIRC.
Buy. It.
whats this? a pristine 1st gen Escort?

Well really... i think the best we'd be doing here would be some sort of weird 1.9/2.0 SPI hybrid on boost. I don't think it would be hard to do, but not really my area of expertise.

Well, there's this guy on the board with a second gen track rig...
I paid $950 for a ratty '87 EGT in '99, my first car. By way of two clutches, two alternators, an engine fire, a blown head gasket, some rust repair, brakes, and a PILE of tires(burnouts!), I spent something like $5k on the turd in a year and a half. Rod knock was excessive, so I got $100 trade in toward a 4wd '91 Civic wagon and never looked back.
Six... thousand... dollars. Holy crap.
A very simple 1.9 HO from an EGT/EXP Sport Coupe would wake this one up nicely, IMO.
Someone please buy it.

In reply to N Sperlo:
Easy. silver tops bolt right up with zetec flywheel and starter spacers. Blacktops require fabbing welding on a bracket for the starter. 2 pieces of angle iron a RH motor mount make.

It has been done. The guy who used to own the EXP forum swapped a Zetec into this EXP, which was the same chassis. You may be able to uncover some old threads on the subject.
