I guess I didn't realize it until now, but just as the Mustang II looks and feels (when driving it) like a compacted T-Bird of the early '70s, these look like compacted Lincolns from the early '60s.
Some folks say that considering the size of the engine and the size of the car...these T-Birds aren't all that fast but manage to guzzle quite a bit of gas. (That's what I've heard, anyway.) A car that has been sitting in a field is always kind of dicey, but if I had the time and money and SPACE...yeah, I'd be tempted. As a kid who grew up in the '50s and '60s, I really think the styling from that era is the best.
BTW, I have a feeling that this is a cropped picture and that there are more cars and/or trucks than these 2 in that field.
Are those the ones with the wrap-around dash and steering column that swings out of your way for entry? I always thought those were cool.
They're very bad to rust in all sorts of ways, but they do look pretty neat.
The fact that the stock 352 can be swapped out for a 390/428 is probably academic in 2012.
These 'bird can look awesome with the right paint, stance, and wheels. Restoration parts abound for them and the 390 FE can be built nice and stout.
Lots of people who don't know FE motors will call them unefficient boat anchors, and yes they are basically dump truck motors, but..., they are unefficient dump truck motors that won LeMans, sent Enzo back to Italy in tears, and LeMans was so threatened by the FE, they changed the rules to get rid of it.
And, as far as gas mileage, if you don't like it, buy a Prius. I drive a '63 Merc wagon with a 390, a ragtop '65 Caddy with a 429, and a V-10 Excursion. Yea, buying gas sucks, but it's one of those "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand" kinda things.
The butt kissing son-in-law of the owner of the company my father worked for had one these when they were new. It was one snazzy car. I still like these, as well as the 65 and 66.
