Do you mean old-school cyclecross because, back in the days before mountain bikes, we used old road bikes for that.
Big difference between a 50 and a 54cm.
It is a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike. It usually has drop bars, better geometry and more comfortable than a road bike. Usually they have cantilever brakes and can run wider tires.
