Unless it has to be a 304, the 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401 are all same block. 304 was stroked 290 with better flowing heads. 360 was stroked 343 with better flowing heads. 401 was stroked 390--390 had the good heads in 1970, 401 came out in 71. The 70 and early 71 heads are the best. Compression fell mid 71 onward.
290/304 had small valves, 343-401 had bigger valves. The 70+ engines featured "dogleg" exhaust ports and flowed much better than the earlier square ports. They dogleg heads interchange to early blocks with appropriate headbolts.
390s and 401s had forged cranks and rods...others were cast. All AMC blocks are cast in high nickel iron, which is almost as hard as steel. They have marginal oiling systems for performance applications, but there are known, easy fixes--the main one is to run an oil line under the intake to make sure the rear bearings aren't starved.
