Looks far better than the typical rust mobiles we have in the Midwest.
Overheating after a short drive with these is usually bad head gasket rather than thermostat. Compression will often be okay, but don't let that fool you. Not a bad fix, but you need to shave the head the absolute bare minimum.

or swap in a Honda drivetrain and move on.
It could simply be that the coolant system is improperly bleed as the X-1/9 is notorious for being difficult to bleed. You basically have to raise one end of the car higher than the other. If you raise the front, there's a bleed nipple on the radiator that is known to fail, but its the proper way to bleed the system.
