Thinking a bit about this car made me ponder something - while capable cars in turbo/AWD form, they were still heavy & suffered from the power limitations of their drivetrain. The non-turbo/FWD cars weren't much for performers, but as this example shows, can be dirt-cheap.
So what's the likelihood of finding an IRS diff capable of withstanding greater power(Miata?) that could bolt into the stock location - if the chassis were the same for FWD vs. AWD - then drop in some other north-south drivetrain for motive power? Obviously the trans tunnel area would need serious modification, but if you could get away without re-engineering the entire front & rear suspensions that would be a benefit.
Though you'd still have a large, heavy Mitsubishi when you're done...
