Ask the seller if the tach bounces when it's turned over. If not, it's probably the DME relay, or possibly a reference sensor. Either way, it's a cheap and easy fix.
Worst case, they popped the timing belt, but even then its worth $600 to drag it home and fix it.
If you don't like it, you can still sell it for a profit.
If you like it, you can keep it and make it "yours" and enjoy it for many years still.
I will inquire. I'm only interested because it's an 1988 S with the 10.2 compression 2.5 liter, while not fast by today's standards could be fun. And only 80k miles on it.
Are these an interference motor?
In reply to akylekoz :
Yes. Yes they all are.
Not the end of the world, grab a spare head and a FOES (because nearly every used 924S/944 needs a FOES performed by the new owner) kit and put it back together. Change the fuel lines and any old seals/hoses you might find while you're in there and go enjoy the car.
Classed into E-street for autocross, looks to be 160hp and 2350ish lbs. Might not be terrible.
For the price you should get it.

That does appear to be the '88 924S SE . Like he says only 500 of them. I believe that interior is unique and light weight, so most wore out quickly. That looks like a great deal if it checks out.
I'm going from memory here, but I think the front and rear ride height are adjustable.
I thought the SE was a slick top, this appears to have a sunroof. The interior is correct though.
And please stop. Really, my wife just doesn't get it.
The sunroof was available. It has the right interior and one door mirror. It could be one of the 500. I wish this was in Florida.
