I have 2 complete type 3 1600 dp in the garage.  Located in Detriot, MI.  One has a chipped valve, but I have dual carbs and a throttle linkage too.  Not hard to reassemble and get in a car!

I know VW folks have a habit of hoarding, so I'd trade a 2.0 type 4 motor (just a core would work, i want to hop up the motor anyway).

Also have all the D jet hardware if you are completely out of your gourd.

I have one in Charleston SC that is free to a good or bad home. It's taking up space in my garage and the sand-rail I got it for is long gone.

Are you talking to me?  Are you talking to ME?

Maybe?

I'll try to shoot some pictures of it tomorrow. I'm not sure which engine it is, but but it's complete including the tins.

check the crank endplay ,  new is 3-5 thou with a wear limit of 8 thou

10-12 thou is probably OK , but lots more is looking for trouble,

Check the valves cold , 6 thou is where you want them , a little loose is OK , but if there is no clearance it could be valve or valve seat problems ,

Check and see that the air diverter is between the cylinders and under the cylinders , I have seen them on top which cuts off the cooling air !

Get the Complete Idiot book ,  ask some local used book stores ,

And remember that VWs are cooled by COOL air being sucked into the fan and over the oil cooler and heads and cylinders ,  If you let HOT exhaust air to be sucked up for cooling you are losing the plot.....make sure all the sheet metal is around the edges and a rubber seal is also there........it will take you as long to do this than install the motor , but its important......

OHHHHH and the last thing is check the fan and make sure it did not suck in a shop rag , piece of plastic or even string that will get in the way of the cooling air......

Good luck ,  If you need any other info just ask.....

I just didn’t want to step on anybody's toes.  I didn’t start this thread but I’m a lot closer.

In reply to eastsideTim :

If that deal falls thru, go to Triumph of Cincinnati, ask to see the general manager “Mark”, he knows where all the air-cooled VW motors are in the area. (Yeah buying VW parts is like trying to buy drugs.)

I seriously miss my Bradley GT. It was an absolute blast to drive, and a serious attention getter. Mine was bass-boat red metal flake.
