Ugh. Just ugh. Two years in a row and here again. None of the intentional challenge cars are coming. Thankfully all of my cars are interesting and crappy enough to be challenge cars.

First plan for the year was to be the fastest FWD drag car in the history of the event.

But we're not drag racing (yes it's fast, yes it's coming next year)

Okay okay I have this under control we have an MR2. We have a plan of autocross domination. This is going to work.

One fried Megasquirt later we're up the creek without an ECU.

Enter this piece I  traded last years Miata for this over the spring after forgetting I owned the Miata until the magazine arrived. (Not sure how that works budget wise but I'll figure it out.)

No worries. I think I have some pinto shocks for you if you still need them.

So tonight's progress:

Confirmed the exhaust manifold fits upside down.

Found and evo 9 turbo in my box of turbos

Negotiated pipe for beer deal with local fabricator friend

Fabrication begins tomorrow.

You don't say ... can't wait to see a turbo M42.  No matter what Lil Stampie says or drools, he really, really does not need or want a turbo E30 for his first car.

The Pinto is gone.  Actually on to two owners past me.  While it was cool, I realized that I've been trying to replace my first love for a build.  We'll be building my first love after October 13th.

No promises (this is ambitious as it is) but what is Lil Stampie's favorite color?

Learned something about my son. He likes E30s in bronze.

Personally I like red.

What's the plan for fuel and boost management? All of this is relevant to my interests. Your 318is looks to be in much better shape than mine.

A detailer friend and I are going to try to bring the paint back to life it may or may not work.

Boost management well I have a life misspent turbocharging stuff so things that are "budget" or in the case of the challenge "free" to me may not be to you.

The twin scroll TD05 should be a great match for the engine. I bought it a million years ago from somebody who claimed it was a stock SRT4 turbo it clearly is not however what he did do was sell something that has a $400ish street value for $50. Unfortunately it did not come with an o2 housing or wastegate actuator. Ideally for a clean/cheap setup you'd use the really good factory Mitsubishi wastegate assembly and an evo 8 actuator maybe lengthen the rod a bit so it opens sooner.

In my case I have a few nearly free or free external wastegates and the capacity to make flanges. I'll be removing the internal wastegate mechanism and adding provisions for an external gate to the o2 housing (sounds odd I know but that's how Mitsubishi does it) boost control will be handled by a  black Tial spring and perhaps a simple mechanical controller if we need more power.

Fuel system is relatively simple fresh stock filter and blown clear lines (e30s have lots of fuel delivery issues with neglected stock setups) and a $30 chinese o44 pump in line (have a bunch I've removed from customer cars for the genuine article) if you weren't trying to do this for no money you could do an AEM 340 or Walboro 450 in tank or a real o44 in line. Look at N54 boost-a-pump setups for inspiration.

The stock lines are adequate for the power I intend to make however if I find enough scrap -8 around here it never hurts. Run whatever you come up with to the stock rail. Both Mustang and by proxy neon injectors fit the stock rail on most BMWs this opens the door for nearly free ($40/set all day) 577cc injectors (Stock/Stage 1 SRT4) or if you want to go nuts 2200cc (it will never idle) (CNG powered Crown Vic).

Our exact setup as I've currently planned it:

Used China o44

Aeromotive A1000 I found in a trash can at South Mountain Raceway

Fleamarket sourced AN hoses/fittings

Napa Gold Fuel Filter

Misc. wire, terminals, fuse, and relay (fuel pumps like good clear electricity)

Tuning is more tricky I have an EPROM burner and a couple spare ECUs to harvest chips from. I use TunerPro to mess around with N54 cars it appears there is some E30 support so I'll be trying that. In reality for the relatively miniscule power goals I have have we could likely keep the timing map stock and play with fuel pressure to get things dialed in.

Doing my best to keep this up to date but also trounced with work, work on the car, work on the trailer, and work on the truck.

Exhaust manifold tacked up. Had to give a little love to the tower support and wheel well for it to be an easy fit.

Painted up valve cover and intake while they were off.

Had to shorten up the thermostat housing in stock form it wants to be in the compressor housing.

Awesome news! This thing has studs. And a compression test shows it's either really worn out or not 10:1 compression any more. Either way we plan to have it turned up.

China camber plate goodness.

Now to drive to southern MD for a sway bar and some shocks.
