i have been kicking around the idea of building a challenge car. reading the build threads and seeing what other members and staff have done with the budget it's a little intimidating.

i set a budget cap of $500.00 on the car to be used. after looking and looking nothing in that price range did it for me. so i up the price and bought this 1967 Mustang coupe it is a 6cyl. auto with drum brakes and no power steering or brakes. it has very little rot and the interior is nice except drivers seat. this beauty set me back $1,250.00

we have kicked around what to use as the drive train and we made list of donor cars that we knew were laying around in fields and barns that could be bought cheap. we have decided on a 1968 Jag xj6 with a 4.2 liter 6cyl. it has the European spec 3 SU's on it so it is rated at 250hp+. i started this car last year so it should still run. the body is just a pile of rust and most likely will break in half when we try to haul it out of the field. the owner was asking $300.00 for it last year we hope he will come down some

we are going to try to build this period correct because us old guys have a tough time with engine swaps that have a computer attached

Hah! Brilliant . Sweet find, too.

In other automotive circles, they swap Mustang engines into Jaguars .

That looks like a really solid car for $1250. I'm looking forward to this one!

How the hell did you find that for $1,250. For the first time ever I think I may be living in the wrong state. Killer deal, well done. Here in Mi you would have to pay 5 times that for the same car and some people would just add a 0 to the end.

I'd say keep it relativly stock, with no power anything you probably already need to tie it down to prevent it blowing away in a stiff breee so weight isn't an issue. Upgrade the brake, lower it, correct the front end geometry, add some Diamond ir similar circle track wheels then throw in a 302 or 351 with a carb and call it good.

Double checking the date due to the price. Nope, it isn't April 1st

the 302/351 did cross our minds but that is what everyone would expect to be done. we wanted to do something outside the box and wanted to keep it period correct. plus make it easy and look good. the 4.2 liter is one of the best looking inline 6 motors there is and they are basic. one team member is a SU expect and knowns how tho get the most flow out of the head.

if you put the word out and have the connections, people will find things for you. i was at the right place and time and had the cash. that is how you get deals

Rover / Buick V8? Get a late Range Rover 4.2 engine and dress it to look like a 60's 3.5L with a carb.

Think about the wonderful unholy union. A ford with a Buick Engine that became a Rover, which was used in Land Rover's that was sold to Ford so Ford were selling a Buick engine. The irony is soooo delicious Added bonus that it will make a light car even lighter as it’s an all alloy engine. Add a T5, also a light trans then paint it like a WWII P51 Mustang.

How about a bored over 300ci ford straight 6. You can then run the newer 5.0L emblems on the fenders just to mess with people.

Awesome, can't wait to see the direction this takes.

What are you going to do in terms of paint? The current paint color is kind of cool, especially with a Jaguar power plant under the hood.

Cool. I have to say though, as neat as the idea of a Jag I6 sounds, I'd be more inclined to go with a 302 SBF for the simple fact that when it's done being a Challenge car, it can still continue life as either a C-Prepared or maybe even a Vintage racer.

the car will be green... try and guess what shade

we want to do this within the budget but we do have questions

1) the car cost $1250.00 and the donner is running $300.00 can we sell parts from both cars for a total of $1550.00 or just $1250.00

2) we want to upgrade to disc brakes can we do this and not have to charge off as part of $2013.00 or since we are upgrading do we have to figure that into cost

3) all parts are charged to $2013.00 even if donated

Unless the rules have changed I believe the max recoupe is $1000. "Any extra should be used to help keep the SWMBO happy"

$1000 is the max recoupe and you can only count brake components if they are stock replacement parts.

max TOTAL recoup is 50% of the calendar year, so $1006.50 for 2013.

max recoup for any purchase (whether it's a complete vehicle or a box of parts) is the price of that purchase, up to the max total recoup. $300 parts car has max recoup of $300.

trading is only allowed up to the point that a purchase has been recouped to zero. so only sell $299 off of that $300 parts car, and keep trading stuff from it all the way to the challenge.

discs can be done very inexpensively on that car. i designed adapters to use 2005 - 2009 Mustang GT front brakes on the '67 - '70 drum brake spindle. requires 17" wheel, but if you're keeping that green paint you're going to want a set of SN95 Bullitt wheels anyway. if you want to build your own caliper adapters i'd be happy to talk you through it. i lost my fab capability so can't build 'em for you at this time.

this place has complete front brake take-offs for $150. that's two rotors, two calipers with pads, plus the jounce hoses. this is where we bought the parts for my buddy's '68.

this would be an upgrade, so all costs would have to hit the budget.

As the owner of a dark moss green '67 fastback (with parchment interior), 289 auto, I'll be following this one. It looks like you have a very solid starting point. I like your thoughts on the engine too.

If you start selling parts, keep me in mind. If you have black rear belts, I'd be interested in those at a good price.

a new development on the build someone wants to trade a 68 mustang notch and money for the 67 now if we take the trade and the $1000.00 what does this do to our budget. the 68 is a project basket case but it is really soild and we were planning on tearing the 67 down to this point anyway.

the big question is the budget and what does this do to it

You can only recoup up to the cost of the original parts deal. If you spent $1250 on the car originally, you can only recoup up to that amount by selling it. You're also limited by the $1006.5 total recoup (half the annual amount), which in this case is lower.

Basically, if you went through with the deal you could count the $1000 that you'd be paid as recoup and the '68 as trade, so you'd only have to put $250 in the budget for the '68 chassis ($1250 originally spent minus $1000 recoup). You would only have $6.5 left that you could recoup as additional money on your budget though. Bottom line is you'd be left with $1763 to spend on the project ($2013-$250) and $6.5 left that you could recoup.

That's my take on it anyway.
