Purchased this from Oklahoma. 1 owner (I think) and only 60k miles(!). No rust, but interior is sun burned pretty bad. Found another pair of front seats (unique to the Fox GTI) so will be able to make 2 good front seats from 4 of them.
Wasn't running, and I've done a million old VWs & Audis, so know the CIS injection pretty well. Turning the key didn't make the familiar short buzz when the fuel pump primes, so thought either the pump or the relay was out. Pulled the relay, jumped the terminals, and it started buzzing. Turned the key and she fired right up, after sitting for months.
I picked up an Audi 4000S 1.8L engine from the salvage yard, really hoping to get the close ratio 5 speed from that car, but it was an automatic, ugh. Just ordered a master cylinder, as there is no pedal, and plenty of fluid and no leaks, so once that arrives and gets installed, I'll clean it up, put it on the lift and evaluate the next steps.
Anyone have an Audi 4000S 2P code 5 speed transmission?
Oh, and pic is when I arrived home - chrome plastic hubcaps were thrown away instantly. It has Rabbit GTI snowflakes on it now. Also have a Rabbit GTI front swaybar I might try to adapt to use in the rear, and some springs to try and get some stiffer shocks/struts.

I learned to drive in a 78 Audi Fox and have been looking for one for the last two decades with no luck.
I'll be following this one for real nostalgic reasons
I built a wagon that I did a manual swap on years ago. One of the ones I miss.
Are you kidding me! How just how do you find these car's? Your starting to kind of piss me off just a tad bit. No one should be so dang lucky all the time.
Still a good find. Hell of a lot better than the coupe I bought off the BAT last year. One and only time here for this kid. Can't wait to see what you do with it. Probably had a line on one of the trannies about a year ago up here. Someone was selling the whole 4000s for parts. Had no place to put it and I like being married so didn't get it. I'll dig in my phone and see if he still has it. I can also check a place down farther south as they have a multitude of vw and audi parts but don't advertise it.
So, the shift linkage stabilizer rod was missing a bushing (not surprising) and the shift linkage is missing 80% of hte bushings, and the remaining bushings are only, maybe 20% there, so that explains the not shifting. Ordered a shifter bushing kit from Europe (which arrived yesterday) and looked through my stash and found 4 (!) spare shift stabilizer rods - 2 with good bushings, but wrong length (probably for a 5 speed), and 2 of my custom made short-shifter rod-end linkage pieces.
NEW fuel pump relay from Poland (!) installed and works perfectly. NOS ATE brake master cylinder installed, just need to bleed brakes. With the shifter, then she's a driver! Makes it much easier to move in and out of the shop for cleaning and other work. I know she's got some neglected maintenance and deep cleaning needed.
And I thought my Audi 200 20v was rare! Awesome find! I love these Foxes but they're all long gone in the Midwest. Looking forward to seeing you bring this one back to life
Not to threadjack, but I sold my first urs6 to a guy who swapped an AAN and Quattro drivetrain into a shortened Fox coupe. He ended up selling the project to another local Audi guy who finished it. Pretty wild little car.

That is AWESOME!! So much fab work, it's crazy.
Pics of the shift linkage piece, the new bushings, and the old shift rod and one of my custom rod end ones - it will need to be shortened and bent, but it always makes a huge difference in shift quality.
Well, some of the plastic bushings are not the original size, so I had to grind down the metal shafts on one piece where it fits into the smaller plastic. Also shortened and modified my rod-end stay rod, so I can use it on the Fox. Getting close to driving it!!
Bushings installed into shift linkage (the spare one) and had to hone out the plastic a bit and grind down the metal a bit on the lower peice with the hollow center to make it work. The 'stay' rod couldn't easily be made to work and I didn't feel like heating and removing and reinstalling the old plastic cup from another shift rod (already worn) to fit over the ball end, so just modified the rod-end shifter rod to work with the 4 speed (I originally made it for a 5 speed) and modified the 4 speed shift linkage to work with it.
It uses 1/4" bolts so where the ball is removed that's fine, but where there is an M8 bolt on the other end, I got a brass sleeve bushing to use to take up the slop. Will have to dress it down a touch, but still waaay better than a rubber bushing (worn out) on one end and a missing plastic cup and ball on the other end.
So,a little explanation, the bottom part of the shift linkage that had the ball end on it, I removed (ground off the riveted side of it) and then straightened out the bend. It makes that part longer, so creates a shorter front-to-back shifter throw. Along with the rod end bearings instead of rubber and plastic bushings, makes for a much better shifter feel and response. IIRC, the added length by straightening the linkage reduces throw by about 25%?

Jonathan's on this forum sporadically.
I have 5/4ths of the bubble block 2l engine that powered the Fox before the project went in a crazy direction. That is to say, mostly the one-off ultra low compression forged pistons, plus a fifth new one, in an MC block bored out to 82.5mm, and then it gets weird. It's in a QSW, not a Fox.
