No doubt he's already getting an A in maths.
i need a name for the car, i was thinking tim but theres alot of miata's named tim. any suggestions?
I have several thoughts. How about
Charm? It's your third car so third times the Charm?
WD for Wet Dream? What normal 14 year old gets an NA for a car?
Coma. It's been sitting in a coma for a long time.
Sleeping Beauty. See above.
so turns out hurricanes can do damage, its not to bad just a broken windsheild and bent passenger wiper
If you are posting about your windshield most everything else must be in good condition. Glad everyone is well. As for the Miata, it'll buff right out (after a windshield swap).
stance car who?
i decided to work on the car a little because i was bored, i got the exhaust studs off. forgot to take pics of that but the studs came out with the nuts, which will work to my advantage because now i dont have to take the whole manifold off. but i decided to try anyway. gave up after one nut... they're very hard to get to and very hard to get off.

Soak them in the CRC freeze off. It's beside where we worked on Suprang. Also tighten a little then try to loosen.
got the head off today, it was a bit ugly.
looks like #2 started getting hot then the head gasket blew, it think it blew on an oil passage which would explain the oil in the intake, think the heat cracked the head between the exhaust vavles, thats the gouge you can see. will probably just start fresh with a new engine anyways for experience and, well its just better as this ones almost at 200k and idk what the bottom end looks like. here are some closer pics
I just want to say that my kid is stubborn and did 99% of the work to get to this point by himself. I got home today from work and he was almost there. He turned me into a tool grabber and heavy lifter. Also that head is berked.
In reply to Stampie :
Kudos to the kid! I'm sure he learned a lot. Sadly it looks like there is a lot more to learn in this case. Glad you played your role too! Playing good helper to your kids can be tough.
In reply to AnthonyGS (Forum Supporter) :
I might have pointed out several times how I was a much better tool grabber than he was. But I'm sure that was a learning point for him.
In reply to Stampie :
If he is learning that is the key. I bet this turns out good. Your son will learn a lot, you both get father / son time, and he will end up driving something he played a key role in reviving,
A little JB weld should fix that right up....
I think I've got a spare 1.6 in either the garage or the barn. I'll check if you'd like. Might take a day or two.
woke up randomly and was looking at the pictures, intake on #1 is open shouldnt #4 be open too? that doesnt seem right
In reply to ToManyProjects :
i'll probably just get a cheap 1.8 and clean it up, the conversion kit isnt to expensive.

And our numbers are:
#1 0 psi
#2 0 psi
#3 0 psi
#4 15 psi
Went back to look at these numbers after looking at the pictures of the head and head gasket. Main failure was between 1 & 2 with another failure between 2&3. That explains why all three of them were 0. As for #4 there were loose head bolts. The back drivers wasn't even hand tight. There was another like that and then the rest of the bolts were varying degrees of tightness. You can also see the oil coated exhaust valves on 1,2, and 3. Pretty sure that's the source of oil in the intake and maybe even the overheated cat. Tell me if y'all think I'm wrong.
I would imagine that car was driven a lot after the head gasket failure looking at the numbers and photos. Your analysis seems likely given the big blowout in the gasket and the signs of burning from cylinder to cylinder on the gasket and head.
Oil getting to the car and burning in the car will mean the ceramic matrix in it is failed too. That will create excess back pressure for sure. Time to find a suitable replacement for it too. I'd enjoy photos of the cat internals too.
In reply to AnthonyGS (Forum Supporter) :
He replaced the cat back in Feb. Here's his picture of what the old one looked like. I suspect 2 POs ago had the failure and when the cat failed they just rodded it out then continued to drive the car until it couldn't give any more.
In reply to Stampie :
I've seen that before. I'm pretty sure all that oil burning melted the ceramic matrix.
ive decided that im gonna go ahead and just get a good 1.6 to throw in for now just to have a working car and get a 1.8 to build and run boosted when i turn 18
