If he's driving it at the challenge he's a team mate not a paid worker, take that $11 out of your budget total.
OK, cool. Official Challenge budget is $749.99

Real cost to me, including burned oil, tools (feeler gauges, ring compressor, plug socket) and soft drinks during the purchase comes to $848.80
Do you still need the cam tool? Might can come down Sunday after church.

Cam tool?
I need a valvespring compressor, but I can also borrow one locally. Sunday I'll be at church and then at a birthday party for a friend-of-the-kid until around 4.
Its the overhead cam valve spring compressor tool. Bought it and never used it.
But if you got a local one...

I have one coming at lunch.
As an aside, I am trying hard to balance between not being afraid to ask for help, and being a complete mooch. I hope I am doing that.
Anyway you are totally welcome anytime anyway. My car time starts between 8-9 depending on kid behavior, though.
Many thanks for the offer.
I've offered but have been staying away figuring that you got this. If you seriously need help you need to say so.
I've been doing this all day.

All of the head is done except this valve. The keeper is gone. The springs, retainer and keepers hit me in the face on this, attempt #2. The keepers are gone.
BOOOO
The exhaust seals are really hard to get off, but they are all replaced. With the exception of these keepers, it would be bolted to the block tonight.
Dude, that sucks.
Are they readily available?

In reply to Dusterbd13:
Including shipping, Rockauto is sending a pair for $3.25.
Not too bad, but really annoying.
New budget totals are $753.24 and $852.05

Tunakid #2 and I hung out in the garage this evening.
As it stands, he is sitting next to me on the floor crying. This is due to the fact that he does not like the type of drink cup I gave him for bedtime. It has been a long day and he (and I) are very tired.
Earlier, though, it was great. He was on the floor with me staring up at the engine learning what did what. He watched intently at the old man slathering RTV on the corners of the oil pan and torquing all of the many fasteners to 9 lb ft in the proper order. We were very late for gymnastics because of our garage time. I flew in the shower and got a "Daddy? I had a really fun time with you in the garage" while I was in there (and while I was drying off, because it was a really fast shower) and it made the whole day pretty great.
Happy Memorial Day everyone!
Oh yeah, so the oil pan is on.

Last night (later than I would probably wish) I put on the transmission inspection cover thing and the engine crossmember. Next is the lower engine mount (which I can hopefully put on with the crossmember in place) and the new water pump gasket.
And then I pretty much have to wait for the keepers.

I know this is positively riveting to you guys. The good news is that it will really make me appreciate working on the truck.
The bad news is that I have to ignore a lot of stuff on the Honda. "What's that, a torn boot on the little shifter linkage thingie? Well, if I look over this way instead, that little boot seems fine! That crossmember covered in grease and grime? Can I get to the holes? It's perfect now!"
This is not a comprehensive clean, repair, redesign, reinstall every component like the truck is. The good news is that it's 1/10th the cost. The bad news is that it's far less satisfying.
Also, Tunawife sees two unfinished projects and sort-of-even-if-she-won't-admit-it doesn't believe that I can actually finish things.

Oh, and Tunakid #2 has a date with the welder when the Honda gets the heck out of the garage. He's five, it's about time.
I want him to come out when it's time to work on the top end too, so he can actually turn some wrenches.
So am I.
Can he attend the challenge as a team mate?
I'm excited every time this thread jumps to the top of the page. I'm pulling for great success on this project.

Ahh. We will see. I have four. After last week they age 7, 5, 4 & 2. It's tough to split them up. Tougher to drag tunawife around.

I know the feeling with 6, 4 and 1 3/4 yo plus da wife with a very recent broken ankle plus 2 dogs and 4 cats. Busy busy busy
I have four too. It gets easier to grab one or two for 'special dad time' as they get older. It's still hard to dole that time out equally. Always hard to convince Mrs. Deuce that she and all four kids should hang out at car things.

+1. My wife hates old cars now. She loved my 71 Cuda when we dated and she wanted a 63 split window Corvette. She HATES all my Volvos. Now all she wants is the latest and greatest mommy vehicles.
You guys with four are nuts. We have one more on the way but four?... how do you? eat?sleep?
I mean yeah... one keeps you busy but FOUR!!!.
