just reread your post, Have Torque wrench, Can Travel. Ain't no Savant But built a few.
Watch some YouTube videos and get that engine together. Hope your buddy is ok.

Thx, John. Right now I think we've figured out how to proceed. Gonna have to scale back ambitious original plans and go forward with basic engine rebuild. May take you up on offer when we get into .tranny

Thanks for prod, stampie. We're gonna dive into the motor and hope we can get it running well enough for another mid pack challenge effort. A man's gotta know his limitations. 
A little update. Our teammate who was badly burned is now discharged from hospital and recovering at home. Seems too early but quite honestly his insurance sucks so hospital is being a dick and wanted him out. Don't get me on a rant about how screwed up the health care system/for profit hospitals/big pharma/ insurance industry is in our country right now. In any event he is alive and really coping much better than I would.
We've decided to soldier on and try to finish car for challenge. It's not gonna be a vette kart but body has been extensively modified. Wheelbase obviously still stands at 96" but overall length of car has dropped from stock c4 of 180" down to 138". By comparison, a stock Mini Cooper is 151" overall length. It's gonna be a unique c4 when we're done.
Spent all afternoon whack in up a c4 clamshell hood. Stock weight with light assemblies etc is 104 lbs. After much Sawzall and cut off wheels and dust and metal cuting, weight is down to about 30 lbs...of course no more headlights or motors. Or metal reinforcement. Or front fenders. In fact there's not a whole Lotta hood left.
Tomorrow rewiring and engine exploratory surgery.
