The holidays came and went.

A family emergency popped up for a week... (parents) .. it sort of stabilized.

Had to go out and do SOMETHING on the challenge car.

I've been taking everything off of it that I can.

I was starting to think that I was getting to a point of diminishing returns, when I picked up a box of all "small stuff" that had come off of the car. It was heavy. So I'll just keep plugging along.

Soon I started singing a song in my head ".... a little less corvette..., yes you are, ... a little less corvette ..."

My apologies to Prince.

Found more c4 parts when we hauled off scrap.

And we'r looking forward to seeing you again in October.

I agree, I am looking forward to October as well. Catching up with Stafford1500 and meeting you, your family, Dallas, Seth, Pete, ovid_and_flem, stampie and everyone else made for one heck of a great time. Don’t forget I live about 20 min from the track and I’ll be happy to share my “home field advantage” !

So, I think I did mention that I put the Vette on a weight loss plan?

It's almost ready for pressure washing, final planning (lol), initial chassis painting and brake / fuel work stages.

Attached are a bunch of pics so folks can chime in and  comment on C4/challenge experience and what I should consider moving forward.

Seth, you might not want to look yet... the last of the 'vette funk will be pressure cleaned tomorrow... :)

On the front end, I don't think I'll use the OEM bumper assembly. I think I'll fab a new nose, and get more air in the engine / brakes / radiator. Probably use the sides of the old nose that go under the clamshell and hold the side markers.

Probably remove the center of the front cross bar.

Rear bumper cover will go back, but the bumper structure will likely see some mods.

Any body built any bars or brackets to preload and thus lower the springs on  one of these? I know it's not the 'right' way, but,... because of the challenge budget...

that and because I don't want to build a corvette 'gasser'.

1st round of pressure washing done.

This is the stage where it's clean enough to disassemble further and continue cleaning.. haha.

Firewall cleaned up ok. It's obvious where the seam sealer no longer wasn't..  ...you know... ..sealing seams.

Nice work.  Son of a gun, if it doesn't remind of one those roundy round Late Model Modifieds, in the state it's now in.

I'll probably do the transmission first, when it comes to starting the mechanical stuff, so I pre-cleaned it too.

The rear of the car looks perfect just the way it is. Maybe talk to Steve about a diffuser to take up a little of the space visually while helping suck the car down to the track?

In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :

I like it,

I'd have to start a new thread:

"How to make a C4 suck while moving"

I'm actually also giving a lot of thought to opening up the front end.

Taking the front bumper off really cleaned up the car in my opinion.

Just need to come up with a nice way to finish it off.

Meanwhile, 1st things 1st.

Mechanical and driveline should be completed so I'll have a base to weigh and pick how much goes where.

Although it would be kind cool having a diffuser back there.  I like Seth's thinking.

Great talking to you today!

Regarding the springs, here's a hair-brained idea: If you sandwiched the stock fiberglass springs with a leaf from the back of a pickup truck(or similar) that has less arch than the Vette spring - placed underneath the stock spring and shimmed with rubber, to prevent steel-on-fiberglass friction and damage to the spring - it should flatten it out a bit. Of course, your spring rate is going to go through the roof, but the Gainesville site is pretty darn smooth, and as the Corolla showed last year nearly infinite spring rate isn't necessarily bad.

Great talking to you as well.

Can you text your email address to my cell phone? (the # you called and left your message on, not the one I called back on, that's my home number.)

Yes, I am sure that I am going to have to do something creative with the ride height.

I am working toward getting the big pieces done and back in, so I can zero in on a final weight.

As a side note.. I am going to clean up the factory wiring harnesses by removing the circuits I no longer need.

Originally I was planning on doing it to simplify the wiring.

Today I lifted every harness that had been in the car at once.

DANG.

I think that there will be a little weight savings there too...

When I swap over to analog gauges & install some kind of aftermarket HVAC setup I plan on pulling the ECU and all the related stock wiring too. I was hoping that would save a few pounds, glad to know that it will!

Hello

Another GREAT project to follow.....

A comment and a question

Comment: maybe there's a lower rate leaf spring out there that is better suited to your current -way lower- rear weight - thinking of a trailer leaf spring from TSC or northern auto. I see they are rated for 1500 lb, 2000 lb etc...

Question: with your wiped out cam and concave lifters, how did the internal passages and the oil pan look? Silvery like Harry Potter Slaughtered Unicorn blood, or metal filings or chunks? Wondering how crazy one has to go cleaning the internals of an engine that suffered a wiped out cam..

Thanks

In reply to Agent98 :

A 3rd part spring substitute is interesting and 100% GRM, for sure!

I'll have to think on that one... thanks for the suggestion.

As for the cam, I guess it happened slowly. The pan and the engine looked really clean. Now I did not crack the oil filter open so.... not sure what was in there.

In any case I'll be breaking it down on the stand an giving it a complete degreasing and cleaning.

Probably overall more for the dirt that is on it  than in it.

Early C4s don't have drain holes for the rear hatch channel.

Some folks try to add their own.

Some do a good job.

Then there are the ones like this:

Well ok, thats a hole, where does it go?

Ahhhh... into the interior.

This explains why the passenger side was always the wettest.
