Seems to be this middle bar is added to convert to a two seater
Not really a big fan of that, I'll look more when I get back in town. I don't really recall many sports car racers having the tubes inside the cage

Thinking about doing this more now, wonder if I can make doors our of the current body

You bastard... I remember that Chevelle build from awhile ago... but hadn't looked at updates. "POOF" ...there goes an hour...
Am I crazy to think about making this able to go on the street like that chevelle build.
Any ideas for a cheaper body that will look ok, maybe a 80's monte carlo. The 2000 monte carlo this is bodied in currently looks kind of terrible. But really anything looks decent with nice wheels and a good stance
I figure I could get some seats like this for the street with the head restraints to keep my head away from the cage
Realistically I'm not going to have the money to door to door race this thing for a while anyways, so it will be open track days till then. And when I can afford to do it, I'll just pick up another one for cheap.
I've been wanting a car that I can street and track forever. I loved when my suburban was registered and I could drive it around town
Edit: been looking some stuff, seem to be able to find cars for not bad prices that have rust issues and the such
Wonder if I can sell the current body for very much

Only if you don't have the money or skills for it because seriously, it's a lot of work, one way or another.
You could wrap the cage bars in a layer of hard and then soft foam, or one layer of dual-density foam where there's no room for that.
A mid 80's Monte Carlo could be cool. Bonus points if you can replicate one of the limited production aero-fastback cars. Just need the dash with the vin plate attached.
The tricky part may depend on where you live. I'd be forced to use a pre-emissions car of some sort since such a heavily modified car would be tough to get classic or antique tags for and would thus need to pass emissions. Of course, if I could find a same color car to take pictures of, its not like anyone at PennDOT actually looks at the car in person.
Florida would be no problem
I'm thinking 70-72 chevelle currently, just browsed craigslist and found some decent donors for a few thousand dollars
I just fixed my smaller welder, a lincoln 175, I'm gonna run .025 or .030 wire in it for thinner sheetmetal. Probably .025, and get a spool of .030 for the big welder
Not going to be welding 1/4" and up regularly like I did on my suburban anymore
edit: I'll probably change my mind a dozen times, I usually do in the planning stages
First purchase

And some pics of the rear shocks and quick change, looks like I can remove the axle tubes on the housing. Need to pull the hub off to see if I can just spin it 180* and have negative camber or if I need to buy a new tube
Thinking more along the lines of leaving it a race car now

Those look to be pretty high dollar bilsteins.

Do you guys think the pistons in this caliper are big enough for the rear

Hey! The thread title caught my attention because I knew it sounded familiar. Chris, this is Andy on the Miata chump team. Cool to see your project on here, although, I think you said you may be abandoning it.

You mentioned earlier in the thread that you were disappointed that there wasn't more fab work to be done...Maybe it't just me, but those upper shock mounts look terrible. Single shear and spaced off the frame like that acts as a nice lever arm...Perhaps you could dedicate a little time to reinforcing that?

If that's the case, let me know...

That's a pretty common way to mount them. That bolt passes though a thick piece of tubing and since it's not a coil over car it's not carrying much weight. I've only seen them come apart in crashes.
Haven't done a dam thing yet lol.
I am having a hard time consciously deciding to put regular wilwoods on it, a beat engine and an auto tranny in it, I guess I just need to nut up and do it
Can always upgrade down the road
I would bet you could find an LT1 from an old Camaro or Firebird or even an LS1 and throw it in there backed with a T5 from the LT1 or a T56 from the LS1. Don't know any 5-speeds for the LS1 that are factory... Anyway, I'm sure you can get a cheap drivetrain for it.

Everyone gets hung up on LS1's and 5 speeds. This thing is just going to be used on a road course - you don't need OD, just get one of the 30 bazillion 4 speeds that were around 30 years ago and use that. Way cheaper than a T56, way lighter, and none of the fragility associated with a T5.
Yeah just looked up 4 speeds, pretty cheap found some from 200-600 locally on craigslist
I have a vortec engine I can rebuild, should be able to make 400hp pretty easily with it for cheap. Basically port out the heads and get a cam. It needs to be rebuilt, so I'll deck it and get flat top pistons.
I'll put an engine in as is first though, I have a few 350's, too worn out for racing though
We've gone up to 7000 rpm with a hydraulic roller
I'm pretty sure this car is super light, I can almost pick up the front end off the ground by myself
I'm going to start cleaning up the entire, I'm going to clean up or redo the firewall on the drives side also, has a bunch of holes in it and some damage
What do you guys think I should do for calipers on the front? I am going to get the nascar brake ducts of ebay, they have 3, 3" ducts. Seems like this will keep everything cool not matter what caliper. Any other concerns, I just feel like a superlite caliper isn't good enough
I think the mounts welded to the spindle are for a radial mount caliper, It would be for a larger spread caliper mount also, I'll have to measure it
