I have a lifted Miata with a leaky power steering rack. I would like to know if a depowered rack is a better choice than rebuild/replace the current one. I know that it will be harder to turn when stopped due to larger tires and not rolling. But will it interfere with my off road excursions?? Any one have/had one installed?? like/disliked??
Offroad with larger tires would be the last place I would want a depowered rack.

I would go looking for a manual rack at a minimum.
I de-powered mine as detailed by Flying Miata's website and it was just a bit too much even for me. To be fair, the car has a V8 conversion. The manual rack makes steering tolerable in everyday conditions. Where it still gets a bit tiresome is at a big show where you have to crawl around the field dodging people to find a parking spot. It would be a workout at an autocross.
I've got thousands of laps in Spec Miatas with depowered racks and there's no way I'd want one in a lifted Miata or even any street driven one. In fact, if I didn't need the HP increase from removing the pump I wouldn't want it in the race car.
I ran a depowered rack in my Rx7 last year (15.4:1 ratio, looks similar to that Miata rack). Would not recommend. I didn't mind it being heavy at a standstill, but I needed to use an uncomfortable amount of force in tight turns, which ended up making the car feel downright unsafe.
Offroading with a depowered rack sounds like a nightmare.

Have any of y'all messed with caster when depowering the rack?
Find an S2000 guy that swapped his non ps rack for a Miata one?
Thank you for all the replies!! :0) I needed some opinions on those rack conversions. I will just keep the power steering.
