So, i go tomorrow to pick it up now that the lost title is finally back.
$2000. 160k, no rust texas car. Scruffy. But i need something cheap and simple as a backup car for the family (wife, daughter and extended) and for me to drive while i engine swap my truck. This is it.
Always wanted one.
More as it develops tomorrow!
Ive been waiting three weeks for this....

Cool! These were also on my short list for years.

Subbed. Always liked these. Any plans besides rehab?
Well, I can say it isn't my mom's old car. Hers had leather. Same color though!
Love these cars.
Other than rehab, little lowering, little better stereo, maybe swau bars. Standard drivabeater stuff. Faster, stop better, handle better, more awesomer.
Pretty sure they're 5x114.3 so plenty of rim choices.

Yessir! And ive already been hunting marketplace. But haven't bought any, or any parts until the car is actually mine. Its a major step in self control....

Internet hug for you, bro. I know how difficult it can be.
I love saving cars, bringing them back from the brink myself and the driverbeater series done by you are very entertaining and well executed. So, looking forward!
In my own assessment of this wagon, only the FR wheel is dirty (or the FR wheel is the dirtiest.) Aside from the obvious previous dent, I wonder if there is some unaddressed mechanical damage too. I have suspicion of sticky caliper. That would address the dark dust. But, furthermore there looks to be grease. This leads me to suspect a bad CV or a least a torn CV boot that is throwing the grease. Let the projects begin.
Look what car-part shows "in the neighborhood" and asking $75 for fender and $150 for Bumper Assy if yours can't be saved.

RX8 wheels bolt on, are cheap, strong, and light, and 18x8.
The GT versions came with 18" wheels, and as Sonic notes RX8, and Speed 3 wheels fit...
Enjoy...
Gordon
If it's 5x114.3 mustang wheels fit. You southern boys have nicer drive-a-beater choices than we do up here.

Can you shoot me a link or a better screenshot of that one John? And if I understood the seller's broken English correctly I think it just had a CV joint replaced but step one is going to be getting it up on the lift
www.car-part.com is difficult to link to specific listing but go to the site and choose
2006 Mazda6 and put in your zip code. Search for:
Fender -> RF w/o rocker molding
and/or
Bumper Assy -> front w/o ground effects
Multiple listings will show up with ones closest to your home first. When you do find one, click on the picture and multiple pics of the car will come up. As an example, this car's pics shows 148k miles on the odo. The driver's seat bolster is ripped similar to your own. Also the JY car is a 2005 and the interior seems to be light gray-er where as yours is black-er. Could be a model year change in colors.
driving at the 100 plus miles home because I'm a brave fool
Airbag light and CEL. What's the CEL code? I expect you brought a code reader with you?
In reply to John Welsh :
Nope. Forgot it.
Judging by the New oxygen sensors I'm guessing they were chasing a catalyst code But it drives pretty decent Little down on power from what I think it ought to be but I've got nothing to compare it to
Rx8 wheels are cool and all butttttt.....
Only 17 x 8.
Sweet, these look so good in wagon form.
My butt/lower back really likes those seats, one of my favorites for daily driver duties for sure.
Nice choice!
Duratec 3.0 at that mileage? I'm betting on one of these:
P0420 or 0421 Cat Efficiency Low
P0300 Random Misfire, or specific P0301 through P0306
COP coils start E36 M3ting the bed around 125k iirc
Could also be lean bank 1 or 2, for intake gaskets or torn boot between air box and TB. IIRC they also had PCV hose split issues back near the firewall.
In reply to AngryCorvair (Forum Supporter) :
None of the above actually, despite obvious vacuum leaks upon inspection.
Codes were for throttle body stuck oped, cam position sensor, and egr. I cleared them out, we'll see of they return.
Blueingreen: the drivers seat in this is WRECKED. foam is flat gone. Im going to have to do something short term. This is an untenable situation
Rob: no. Just no. I like these wheels though:
id love to find something similar in 17x7 or 17x8 5x114.3 and bronze. Id really, really love to.
So the drive home was uneventful. The seats wrecked, not all the pixels in the ce ter dash display work, im pretty sure theres no thermostat as it never warms up, one wheel os definitely bent and i suspect that the right front control arms are too, the headlights are poorly aimed and dim, oil leaks i can smell, but otherwise a solid, well driving comfortable and quiet car! Good brakes, decent stereo, ac and cruise work, ran better and better the more i drove it and after blowing some carbon out and fresh gas. Can definitely use a bigger rear sway bar, a little more power, and so e pads with more initial bite though.
Time to get it legal, cleaned up some, on the loft, and hunt parts to sort out safe and reliable.
Passed inspection.
Blue passenger fender that john found had been damaged by someone, and wasn't worth buying. Ill need both fenders though. May be worth buying a pint of paint match....
Egr code has come back.
First round of decreasing done in engine bay, and it still horrific.
This one, about 3 hours from you. States to have RF fender and bumper cover (no mention of LF fender) and prices are not given.
But, I also forget that you are good with paint...I am not!
That belt off the front cam drives the water pump. The tensioner bearings fail, and the belt gets destroyed. Later years (2006 maybe) eliminated the tensioner and went with a stretch-fit belt. Do that. Seriously, you just remove the tensioner and pop the shorter belt on.
In reply to John Welsh :
That JY car does not have the ground effects, so front fascia is different. Bummer.
