Borrowed a 172 from my dad to test fit. My biggest ski is a 177 and is about the biggest I'd ever want. I'll mount a bar across near the front to rest and secure the ski tips. Glad I got my math right.
How am I just finding this thread? I'm wanting a bed cap for my 22 Overland...maybe I already have it in that roll of fiberglass sitting over in the corner?!?
Nowhere near as pretty as a bought cap, but I could make it prettier a second time! And no premade cap in this shape/configuration. Cost so far about $300 and a LOT of time.

Completion. Painted and fits. The lid locks in place. There is a rack to mount skis and snowboards with hooks for bungies.

Everything fits in the back which will be so nice. Nothing trying to come past your headrest when you hit the brakes.
Jeep has a little slot in the bed that fits a 2x6. Makes a nice load divider but also with a couple of little eyes makes a good place to bungie down my fuel jugs.
The poles were returned to our store broken from a sunshade we sold. Half a pole is a perfect height to lift the topper, and they break down into smaller pieces to be stored.

Fuel economy is up ~5% after the first half of the country. That's a win to me. Fuel economy drops to 16mpg at 80mph. Looking back at fuel records I'm doing better than my XJ at lower speeds and worse at higher speeds. I guess that's what you get with a smaller car.

Spur of the moment we actually are in Sioux City tonight on our way to The Badlands.
The Badlands is a real gem and well worth your time! If possible, sunrise or sunset.

From Sioux Falls to The Badlands there was a 30mph wind gusting to 50 blowing side head on. Combine that with the 80mph speed limit we knocked down a 12.7mpg tank! Yikes. Also I noticed the lid didn't like a side wind and was bending up. I'll need to address that when we get to California. Thankfully the wind has subsided and will stay low until we get there.
Badlands NP was awesome. We left the park after sunset. Beautiful place. I love how some parks like this leave the trails up to your interpretation.
I berked up. The top was a little closer to the window than I'd like. I knew this and was planning to fix it this week. This morning it decided to become a problem. As the truck flexed, backing into the driveway, one of the topper window screws contacted the Jeep window. It is now in hundreds of pieces on the back seat.
Oh no!!! Those are the worst screwups....

Been a low snow year but we're finally getting a real snowfall. Time to test the weight capacity!

I really berked up. Today at the ski resort we had hurricane force winds. I didn't realize they were coming straight side on and the hinges failed. The top flipped over, attached by a bungie cord and dented the side of the truck. And the top is cracked and bent.
At least I plan to keep this thing for a long time
