Greetings from Kentucky!
In the interest of actually getting this posted, I'll spare you all the story of how/why I'm here. In fact, I won't even tell you what car this thread is about until you've had time to guess it.
In the meantime, enjoy the numerous, unnecessary, and probably annoying line/paragraph/page breaks along with your few and intentionally vague hints:
It is not particularly fuel efficient. It is not particularly powerful, though many assume it to be. While not unstable or dangerous, it does not handle well.
Nonetheless, I plan to autocross it this weekend.

Wild Wild Guess..fox body mustang?
Oh boy, please let it be Maserati Biturbo!
You say not as fuel efficient as would appear.
A Biturbo is not a large engine so it might appear economical.
I more suspect that few people ever really know the mpg of a Maserati Biturbo since so few actually go a full tank of gas between major mechanical down time.
You say not as fast...
It seems that the expected 185 mph is not achievable.
I'm thinking either Cramit or G-body here. Also, I too am in Kentucky, welcome aboard.
Fox Mustang: Any of the Fox-Platform cars can run rings around this car, regardless of engine.
Biturbo: Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm afraid you're going to have to lower your standards for everything except reliability.
Crammit: Pretty sure even a 4cyl-powered 3rd gen is faster than me.
G-Body: Getting closer... but still too fast.
T-Bucket: I wish, but I think that would get old with a 30 minute commute.
Cobalt: Too new. Also too fast, too small and too FWD.
Grenada Wagon: Probably the only guess so far that can haul more people than mine.
In reply to Chadeux: Thanks! I've been lurking for way too long (about 2 years).
In reply to volvoclearinghouse:
Closest one yet.
In reply to Homework:
Is it a Collonade? I do love me some Collonade.
In reply to volvoclearinghouse:
Not gonna lie, I had to look that one up. It's not a smog-era car.
This is a fun start to a project thread!
My guess based on the original post would have been a 4cylinder Fox Mustang but it seems I'm not on the right track.

I own a foxbody with the 200i6. If 88 hp is faster then what your driving im really curious.
In reply to dropstep:
I completely forgot about the 200ci six. If geared right you probably have a chance. No matter what you should still out-handle me though.
In reply to BlueInGreen44:
I'm glad you like it!
In reply to volvoclearinghouse:
You're close, but not there yet.
Fun Fact (hint): This car was available with 10 different engines across 4 different engine architectures, ranging from 140-425hp.
In reply to Two_Tools_In_a_Tent:
I like this guess. Not a smog era car must mean it's an 80-82.
4 different engine architectures made me think 153 4 banger, six, smallblock and then 425HP big block.....my vote is a `68 Chevy II or Nova.
