All the paint prep work was done in my small garage.

I did spray the trunk area, engine bay, and dashboard here at home

It went pretty well without too much dust or trash in the paint.  The key was to each area separately and let the fumes clear out.

The rest of the car was painted in a booth in one day.  I was amazed how good the paint booth is at keeping the air clear despite spraying 2 gallons of material in a short time.

I never could have done this at home without the neighbors knowing it.  I have neighbors very close to my garage so it was worth it for me to use a friends booth.  My friend actually sprayed the car too as he is more experienced than I am.

Now the engine is in .  Remember this 912 engine in a 911 is temporary while I get a 6 cylinder bought and prepped.

You can see it run in this video

The Flying Banana...

There are few cars that look good in yellow and thats one of them.

Very nice build, love the attention to detail there.

Thanks!  My son hates the color.  O well, maybe he'll change his mind when he gets his drivers license.

Here's my journey through setting up the weber 40 IDF carbs which actually don't belong on a 912 engine, but they can be tweaked to work.

I feel like I cheated with the AFR guage, but damn it makes the job so much easier.

I used some little paper dipsticks the check the float level which I thought were cool.

Wee, dash setup with temporary guages

I also used a hot wire anemometer to synchronize the carbs, plus a pressure transducer contraption.  This might be the most comprhensive carb synch on a 912!

Fitting trim after the car is painted is always a dicey proposition.  To add complexity my trim pieces are from various parts cars.

This means I had to bend window trim to fit using sheer will.

Here's the video link.  I think the final fit to the car is as good as factory or maybe even better?

Ahh the rabbit hole is real!  A YouTube friend came by to test drive my ride and you can see my other project too.  It's a bigger rabbit hole.

Follow Mikes early 911 restoration also.  Incredible work and very detailed explanations.

Check out the new wheels and tires!

I went with new wheels from Braid and Nankang tires. 225//60/15 and 205/60/15

Wasn't too hard to mount myself, although I have access to professional machines that really help!

Rebuilt door strikers really improve the driving experience without the doors rattling sound when hitting bumps in the road. Towards the end of this video I explain how I adjusted the door striker for the best fit without any rattling sound when hitting bumps in the road.

Another fun DIY project for me is string wheel alignment at home.

I made my own string frames that attach to the front and rear latch panels

Also made my own slip and turn plates.

Plus a camber/caster tool frame

Total weight is 1887lbs for my 911/912 at the moment.

Videos below for step by step setup.

I did measure the suspension travel on my car which is pretty low:
Ride Height Rear about 24.5" to non-carrera fender lip. (My car has carrera flares so it actually measures 24")
Ride Height Front is 24.75" to fender lip
Rear droop measured from ride height is 4" and rear compression measured from ride height is 1 7/8"
Front droop measured from ride height is 3.5" and compression is 2"

This exercise of measuring suspension travel highlight some big problems:

We found a bent left rear shock:

And an extra washer thingy that beat up the front bump rubbers and limited travel

So crazy what some "Turkeys" do these cars, but it's all better now!

Ever wonder how far and fast your shocks move when cornering? Or hitting a bump, Or Braking?

A GoPro and some free physics software tells all while driving!

No more creamsicle paint livery!

This week I painted my used and beat up front bumper to match the body (bahama yellow)

I go through my own 12 step DIY paint process that works for me. It's modified for the home DIY'er and you may find it useful?

I want to ditch the sugar scoops and upgrade to H4's, but before I do I had to fix the factory wire harness.

After:

Added 12Ga wire and relays in the bucket:

Lights ON!

I'm confident the car can handle 130W+ bulbs no problem now.

One of the biggest problems with Porsche 911 backdates is the front hood latch.

Most extend the latch to be able to reach in.

I also added a spring mechanism that pops the hood open even without hood struts.

Check it out.

This was before I replaced two springs with one stronger one.

Above is what the extended short looks like from underneath.

Well, I got this 3.2L engine on my test stand.

But I couldn't get it to start before I ran out of time. I'm sure it's something simple.

I ordered a new relay and will try a better battery this week.

Removed the exhaust from my 3.2 engine while still on the test stand.

Turns out I had to buy a big boy torch for this job, but better than screwing up the heads of a running engine!

Another use for my new Oxy/Acetylene toy.
This time I fixed the the dents in my crushed oil line.
Like others have said a little air pressure and heat gets the job done.

The video below shows how I removed the line from the thermostat housing. Not easy, but the cool part is watching the dents disappear like the movie Christine!

I love the new seats. More comfortable, more period correct, better support, and better driving position.

I didn't use the factory mounts, instead I have some FIA style bars that span the longitudinal sills and tunnel. (Very secure)
