Hey GRM-

A little while back I purchased a 530iT from a local GRM member (IndyGuy!), and unfortuantely could not keep the car long due to space.  I am a huge E30 enthusiast, and he suggested I post up some of my E30 adventures.  There are quite a few.

It all began when my younger brother got a 325iX for his first car.  I fell in love, and went on the hunt.  My first E30 I got by magically trading a '96 SC2 for.  That was a 1989 BMW 325iX.  I did a manual swap, built custom coilovers, built a set of BBS wheels, and then sold to my buddy to finish off cosmetically because the car looked like a hoopty despite being really solid mechanically.

And then I got a late model 325iX sedan:

And then I got a manual 530iT like this:

And made it look like this after a full suspension refresh and a ton of other work:

And then I sold everything and bought a manual Subaru Sports Forester XT to daily.

And then I bought an awesome fully loaded, manual (only way they came) '88 iX that was to be my long term bimmer because it was the best.  But then I moved to Indiana and it sat in a barn, but I did eventually finish and sell it.

Got it like this:

I really brought this thing back to life.  The foundation was amazing, though. I more or less refreshed the whole car.

Then I got Linda, my pride and joy.  This is, and will be, my long term E30. It's the ongoing project. I have done a full suspension build, all bushings, coilovers, and a million other things.  I'm currently building a 3.1L Stroker M20 for it. I bought and sold multiple engine swaps (M30b30, M52b28 with ported head and cams), different suspension setups, etc, but think it all ended up working out the "right" way.

Got it like this (after scrubbing):

Now it looks like this:

Well actually, more like this:

Somewhere along that journey I fixed up an E36 and made it look like this:

And then I bought an '89 325iX Sedan for $800 and made it look like this:

And then I had this car for a little while.  SUPER nice M50b32 swapped late model sedan

And then I bought another manual 530iT!  From your long term resident, IndyGuy. I shined it up, fixed some essentials and made it look cute.

And somewhere along the way there I bought my dream car... an E30M3 I had been chasing since 2015.  It's currently in PA awaiting space for me to bring it back out here.  But we (my Dad and Brother) did a full interior resto already, needs suspension and drivetrain work once it makes it out here with me.

And along the way there were many, many parts cars.

Like this one:

And these:

And this one:

And this one:

Oh, and I just bought my buddy Vic's early sedan which has a 3L stroker using a modified m54b30 rotating assembly that I stole to redo into a 3.1ishL for Linda. That car looks like this:

I'm sure I forgot something in there.  But I'll post updates about Linda and the M3 in here as things progress.

Cheers!

That's a lot 'o e30s :)

I built one, and bought a second to do but then decided I would be bored just doing second one of the same car so I went and bought something different. Props to you for keeping it interesting :)

you are clearly better at detailing than I am ;)

I kind of got confused with all those cars... smiley  Are you saying you swapped a M50b32 into a 325iX?  How did you make that work, typically I think it requires a custom oil pan?  Also, I didn't know a 3.1 stroker M20 was a thing, how is that done?

(I've had three 325iX's myself, plus my M535i.  They are great little cars.)

Enjoyed every picture!

I have owned many BMWs including an e30 M3 - maybe my favorite car I ever owned, definitely the car I should have never sold.

I'd put $20 on the fact that you most certainly have more fun in your E30 than I do in mine!  Hopefully that changes once the red iS is all finished up.  I've still never been to an AutoX or a Track Day.  I'm hoping to change that soon!

Ah, I love me a good ole M535i! And negative- the confusion lies in the fact that the M50b32 car was a RWD Sedan, but it had an iX body kit fitted so it looked like an iX!  However, Jake @ClassicDaily has a jig for a 24v swap iX oil pan, you just send him an M50 pan and an iX pan and you get the swap pan in return!

The 3.1L I'm building is using an S52 crank/rods, and a set of custom pistons. I have a 731 head that's been worked over pretty good with OS valves that's going on that combo to hopefully make all of the jam in all the right places.

Thanks! I have met too many folks along the way that regret selling their E30M3.  I don't think many saw the value inflation coming, or else they wouldn't have sold.  It's unfortunate because they're nearly impossible to find for a decent deal, and I don't think they're actually worth what they sell for from a driving perspective. That's why I have the iS ;)

BMW sold a euro only e34 525iX.  I've never found out for sure if it used an M20 or an M50 engine, but have wondered if whatever engine it used could be swapped into a 325iX...if it was an M50, then one further step would be to use the top end of an S52, and then you would have a 286hp iX.  cheeky

There is a ton of talk about the infamous E34 iX- it came with an M50!  However, it used different axle shafts and a bunch of different parts, so the FrankenPan (RWD E34 M50+325iX pan) is still the best option if you're looking to go down that road.  They made so few of the E34 525iX that parts are practically impossible to come by any more. Classic Daily builds quite a few 24v iXes.  Other than the oil pan, which he has a jig for and can make for relatively little $$, it's just a "straightforward" 24v swap otherwise!

Everyone needs an E30 in their life! I hope the market calms down so they become a bit more acccessible, but it doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon.

I love me an '84 318- such a barebones car.  I've always wanted to do one with an aluminum single vanos M52 with M54b30 internals+S52 cams, eurobumpers and euroweaves. Someday!

I know a few people who didn't get along with their E30.  Actually, two of the cars above (the delphin 24v sedan and the black 3L M20 sedan) came from the same buddy who got really burnt out on both cars because they didn't get along.  If the cars and I don't get along I just take them apart, so they don't have much of a choice!

I agree with the barebones. That thing is empty. Mine has a volvo turbo 5cyl and moostang t5 trans. Should be running in a few weeks!

I don't see the E30 market dying down anytime soon. I'm seeing junkers in my area listing for around $3k and none in the junkyards.

Only gonna assume the prices will continue to rise.

So I bought Vic's car to take the engine out of (built 3L with M54b30 internals) to rebuilt with custom pistons and a fully worked 731 head to put into Linda, the red 325iS.  Most of my focus has been on getting Black Betty, aka Vic's car, back together and fixed up so I can sell it and fund the rest of the project.

Got me a nice lil' Stromung for Linda as well off of that car. I bought the Magnaflow 23554 downpipe/cat section so when I buy my IE Long Tubes all I have to do is weld vbands onto the collectors, weld up a Y to the cat section and join it up (as well as adding two 02 bungs, one for the 02 and one for a wideband).

It's so great taking apart a car you just assembled.  The black car, not so much. Whoever built it used "new" soft ****ty shiny nuts on everything and multiple things stripped, broke, etc.  Linda came apart like butter because I used all OEM grade hardware.

Picked up my MS2 PNP:

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

I got my CC kit in and CC'd the new-to-me worked 731 head...... 37cc which is stock. Kind of surprised I didn't "gain" anything but I'm assuming it's due to the oversized valves.

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

I ordered my pistons! For anyone referencing this in the future, this is the setup needed for 10.5 CR on an M20 with S52 crank/rods with a 731 head with OS valves ordering through RaceTep:

JE 4032 Material Basic Set of 6 86mm x 89.6 x 135mm x 37cc, M20 Valves, 7-8 dish for 10.5 CR assuming a .070/1.8mm HG, 206mm deck height.

If you noticed....I bit the bullet and decided to go 86mm bore, as I'm not endurance racing this thing, and the price was exactly the same between 85mm and 86mm.  The only functional difference is more powah and that I'll have to run a cometic HG.

This is the 3L I am swapping pistons in with the top end off showing the work.  I'm going to sell these pistons for a deal for anyone looking to do a budget 3L m20.  They have a special detonation resistant coating up top.

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr
Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

And this was the thick boi HG keeping the valves away from the pistons.  Talk about whack compression height.

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

I'm having a blast getting Black Betty all fixed up. I cleaned the bay, swapped the 24v swap booster out for a 130K mile stock booster off of my parts car, and got Linda's engine all ready to go into Black Betty. The trans in Black Betty was just put in along with a clutch and whatnot. I put a new shift selector seal in for good measure, and then bolted it up to the motor. I swapped the intake manifold from the Betty's original engine to her new powerplant. It's got a ported TB with M30 plate and I opted to keep the TB heater for that car. I also swapped out the water pump on Linda's engine for the early model one so I can retain a proper early model setup for the car it's going into.

I'm going to throw the engine in tomorrow and get it all buttoned up and start on the cosmetics and small stuff.

Some progress has been made:

Got the engine and trans into Black Betty.  I switched over from engine to suspension work to give myself a break and installed the H&R Sports.

I have a bunch more work to do to this thing like cut/polish/seal the paint, paint some trim, replace the drivers seat bottom cushion, fix the passenger side headlight, fix the OBC, swap in a 3.91LSD I have for it, finish up the engine swap, and a few other small things. It's coming together, though!

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr
Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr
Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

I buttoned up the suspension and got the car on the ground. Much better.  The early models always throw me off due to their high rear arches.  I decided I'm going to restore a set of the 14" weaves for this car.

I also got the engine harness back on, and am finishing up re-plumbing most of the systems.

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr
Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

Most of the goods for the 3.1L stroker have arrived! Still waiting on the pistons, but I'm going to get the head over to the machine shop just to have a final approval now that the cam/rockers are here.

I'm dropping the headers off at my buddies shop to get vband flanges welded on (offset for clearance) so I can just drop them in with the engine and not have to worry about pulling them back off. I've also been going back and forth between using my Magnaflow cat section or just having him make the merge further back for the gainz (much like this https://flic.kr/p/2heUzJX).

I don't really know what size injectors I'll need, but I have M50 injectors I'm going to leave in for startup with the 3L SSSquid chip until I switch over to the MS2.

Ported 731 with 885 valves
IE 284/280 Billet Cam
IE HD Rockers
S52 Crank/Rods
Custom 86mm JE 4032 Pistons
Riot Racing BBTB
IE Long Tubes
Injectors TBD
MS2PNP

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

And then I got more shiny stuff!

The custom 4032 slugs made for the 731 head came in.  Pretty exciting, and they made them much faster than I thought they would.

The finish on the 731 head was pretty poor (machinist said "I think whoever cut this needs a new cutter"), and a few spots needed welding around the coolant jackets due to corrosion. Once all that's done it's going to get the right finish for the 86mm bore cometic HG (50RA or less).

The block is getting disassembled, cleaned, and then off to get honed, because...... the pistons are in! The last piece of the puzzle for a little while, until I get all everything back from the machine shop and can start assembling it all. I also need rod bolts, but there's no rush on that.

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

And the black car has been a bear to clean up.  It's running great, but doing a two stage correction on stubborn and finicky single stage has been cumbersome.

After what feels like a million different products and combinations, I'm using good ole Meguiars 105 to cut on a foam cutting pad, and Meguiars 205 to finish using a foam finishing pad.

For whatever reason, my microfiber pads did NOT work well on this paint, no matter what cutter I used.

This was before hitting it with 205. There are still scratches, but anything left is too deep to remove.

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

I finished up the detail on Black Betty! This single stage gave my polisher and I a run for our money. It looks like a different car!

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr
Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

I bonded a bit more with Betty this eve.

My central locking on this car isn't working properly.  I pulled the central locking module board and soldered the tab back on the fuse. System still not working properly, although now it's trying. It'll lock the right side of the car from the trunk and passenger door, but then it immediately unlocks. Me thinks the drivers tumbler failed. BMW thought it'd be the drivers footwell would be a great place to put this module..... right by the.....sunroof drain.

Untitled by Bobbie Morrone, on Flickr

This was a satisfying repair. the front seats are pretty nice, aside from the drivers seat bottom cushion. It was a nasty dyed, shrunken, cardinal piece held in by zip ties. A fresh panel/foam plus some hog rings did the trick.

Do it! Especially if it's a clean car at a fair price- they're not getting any easier to find. iX models are meh because of the suspension geometry change, insanely slow ratio steering rack, etc.  Unless you're truly using it as a winter car, which is an extremely poor choice on many levels due to the rarity of them and their parts now, they are not much to write home about.

But I agree- a solid 325i coupe with a limited slip and some light mods is a hard car to beat!  A chip, a nice catback, K&N drop in filter, some nice struts/springs/sways and you can have all the fun in the world.
