You know if you lie underneath the car while you're scraping all that gunk off you can get it in your eyes.  That definitely adds to the overall experience, I've found.

C4 subframes sure get skanky, but thankfully due to SBC seal “technology” you don’t have to worry about them rusting out!

If i can piece together a cut to 3 pieces ls harness out of the wire recycling can and make it stand alone in a datsun, you can maybe pull this off.

Yes, planning to modify wheel openings in one or more directions.

Hate to lose the wheel opening trim.

Agreed, but I’m not really married to it as part of my theme. 2 of the 4 are damaged.  I know a guy, though, so we shall see.

Been a little slow, or maybe cautious is a better word, these last couple days.  Making sure I understand the electrical system so I can strip down the harness into a stand-alone overlay.  I do believe I’ve got it all figured out now.

so tonight I made a list of things I must do before getting rid of the C4 carcass:

  • remove fuel tank to harvest pump
  • remove fuel lines
  • remove rear suspension
  • remove ABS EHCU and wiring
  • remove engine harness
  • Remove steering column
  • remove front suspension
  • remove brake booster and master cyl

so I hotwired the fuel pump and emptied about 8 gallons out of the tank:

I also bought a used set of block-hugger headers for $20:

Not sure if the headers will clear the knock sensors, but they were cheap and (if they’ll package) will certainly flow better than the OE manifolds.

And a square set of 17x9.5 Sawblades for $50:

So My Sawblades list looks like this:

2x 8.5 with street tires for towing and drag fronts, on car as received

2x 9.5 with street tires for towing, on car as received.  Will get drag tires.

2x 9.5 bare from spin_out via the other Patrick, $40, will get street tires so they’ll be part of the car but not used in the Challenge

4x 9.5 bare from CL for $50, will get A7’s. I have 2 each corded 275/40, 295/35, and 315/35 for packaging study, but I’ve pretty much decided that I’m going with 275 front and 315 rears.  Might even have my machinist buddy sacrifice a couple pairs to see if he can make one pair of 11.5 for the 315s.

All the engine compartment wiring has been removed:

And I’ve got almost everything I need from behind / under the dash.  The C4 PCM does a “handshake” info exchange with the CCM (what we typically call a Body Control Module these days) to enable the injectors.  No CCM, no injecto.  Since IDK if I can flash the C4 PCM if it doesn’t detect the CCM, I’m taking the safe route and installing the CCM into the Corvair for (at least) initial startup and debug.  I’m also planning to install the C4 ABS into the Corvair, and I know there are a few signals and messages that go through the CCM, so maybe I have to keep the CCM in order for the ABS to work.  Either way, it’s here and it could help me keep the smoke inside the tires where it belongs so I’m gonna give it a go.

also, it’s really liberating to take a car apart and not have to worry about putting it back together for the morning commute.

Pretty sure you can flash the PCM. We are putting an LT1 from a 96 Camaro Z28 into an MGB now and we had LT1 wiring simplify the wiring harness and they are flashing the PCM to remove all the unnecessary stuff. While we are paying to have this done, you can likely find the details on the internet to do it yourself.  Here is their web site if it gives you any ideas https://lt1350.com/

So all we will have under the hood of the MGB is the PCM, a short harness to the engine for the injectors, sensors and distributor and then a harness we will tie in under the dash to the fuse box and to the fuel pump. Simple and effective.

Rear suspension is out:

3-point seat belts are out

Park brake cables are out

Steering column is out

ABS EHCU and bracket are out

All wiring except rear lighting and fuel pump is out

Brake tubes and hoses from MC to ABS and from ABS to four corners are out

Not much left to remove.  If my guy is available, we will say goodbye to the C4 this week.

I also sat down and had a serious talk with myself about scope creep.  We agreed that some ideas may not be feasible for 2019 due to upcoming work travel (2 weeks in China plus another SAE Vehicle Dynamics seminar on Mon-Wed of Challenge week), but every effort will be made to accommodate as much madness as possible.

Did this talk include how you plan to comfort yourself when Dusterbd13-Michael hands your ass to you at the challenge?  You know, because Meatloaf is known to go like a Bat Out of Hell.

Had to quit early tonight for a conference call with colleagues from 12 time zones away.  But I got a few things done, and stayed focused for the most part.

Updated task list from the weekend.  Removed rear anti-roll bar.  Removed intermediate shaft from steering rack.  Siphoned brake fluid from MC reservoir and disconnected tubes from MC.

Removed booster (tie bar design carries all the forces, and it’s got a plastic shell!) and MC (Aluminum body with plastic reservoir).  So many of these parts are lighter than the Corvair parts they are destined to replace.  Also pulled a mess of J-clip nuts and some other random nuts and bolts from the dash assembly so I’ll have plenty of them for joining panels etc.

Got my threaded jackstands the other day.  They are beyond cheesy and I’d never support a car on them, but they will be perfect for raising and leveling the subframes for tacking in, etc.  C4 will go away very soon.  All I need to rob from it are the fuel tank and lines and the front suspension.  There’s really not a whole lot left of it.

And just to mess with all y’all, in about a week I’ll start my Gastropod build thread.
